Storing paintings - what's your method?

My paintings are currently stacked up against the walls, with towels over them, but I'm sure there's a more professional/ better of doing it! What do other people do to store their paintings?

these racks were created with leftover shutter doors from a closet, plastic corner bead for drywall for the racks, and were done for 16x20 canvas (16 1/2" opening). Other ones were made at 30" wide, which will also hold 24" wide. The canvasses lay flat, separated by 2" above and below, and the sheet in front does not touch the edges of the canvas. I have 3 dogs and this system keeps the doggie hair from settling on the paintings.

Hope this helps. These have been added to all the way up to the ceiling now.

I had slat cubbies built, which you can see in the background of this photo. Those are now stuffed to the brim, and I have several more in the wee back room of my garage.

This is what we made. it mounts on the wall and in a very small space will hold almost 50 panels up to size 14x18.

Hi Freesail, how did you make the painting rack? It's great for a small space.

It was just a piece of 3/4 inch plywood about 8 inches wide by 8 feet long. A scrape of wood I had lying around. I used a straight edge and drew two lines along the length of the plywood about 1.5 inches off each long edge or side, and then again across the plywood every 2.5 inches down the length so I had about 36 or so lines going across the board. My dowels were some thin metal rods I had laying around, I see no reason why you couldn't use wood dowels. I got a drill bit the same size as my dowels and marked the bit with tape to control my depth ( about 1/2 inch ) and then drilled a hole at every place the lines I drew intersected. I used a piece of scrap wood cut to a 45 degree angle to support the drill and make sure that every hole was in the same direction. Then I glued and hammer or taped the dowels in each hole and painted it so it looked good. The dowels or rods I used were about 8 inches long. It will support panels as large as 14x18 with no problem and as small as 8x10 inches. If you have any other questions just ask.
