Blue Spring

Hello,

after having commented on others efforts it is probably time to come up
with some own.
What you see is the first outdoor pastel that survived my own critic (2 of them
already took fate of early exit in the waste bin).

Please let me know your opinions about weak points etc...

Martin

P.S.: I worked on 2 days on same spot. The size is 20"X26". I used
mainly Schmincke and a bit of UNSISON pastels on water color paper which I dyed dark blue with acrylics.

Re: Blue Spring

I love this -- the colors really work for me! I would love to see this in person -- there's lots of digital noise (from JPEG compression, probably) obscuring some of the strokes. Any chance of getting a better quality image to post?

thank you for your post. Unfortunately I can`t send better images as the
size is restricted 50 max. 500X600. The uploader works only for verticals as a result I have to cut down to 500 pixel width and approx. 450. height. I have only MS Photoeditor for manipulations.

Re: Blue Spring

Hi Martin!

This look like a very English scene. Are you a Brit by any chance? I love the shadows in blue, very impressive! And a lovely use of strong colours, alot braver than I.

I particularly like the way you have treated the sign post. Now if I had done it, it would have been straight up and down and look wrong!

keep up the good work and do some more!

Re: Blue Spring

Martin - this is wonderful!!!! I love the strong and powerful colors you have chosen for every inch of this piece. In particular those beautiful blue shadows of the fence on the right - with that ochre color in the fence - great compliments. Excellent choice on the street color and that sky - wow.
It's difficult to critique this since there is so much going on in the piece. I would have liked to have seen the red car a bit more developed and defined but then again it may have moved several times not including light changes.

Congratulations and give yourself a pat on the back for this one.

Barb

Re: Blue Spring

Terrific shadows and great "atmosphere". I enjoy the down-the-street perspective- and feel that odd sense of deja vu- it *almost* looks like one of the villages I lived in while in Germany.

Congratulations on persevering and coming through with such a strong piece!

Re: Blue Spring

VERY unusual treatment here! Probably looks a bit darker on my screen than it really is, but I LIKE it! Very bold use of color and interesting composition!

I like how it keeps my eyes moving around the scene. I like the flowering bush the best

Re: Blue Spring

Martin, the colors you've used here give this painting loads of personality. I think you need to do more of these outdoor scenes!

Re: Blue Spring

Good morning everybody,

thank you very much for all your compliments. I have to say that I had
difficulties with the digital image, it`s quite lousy. As soon as one uses
strong reds or ultramarine the computer is at it`s limits.

But I am not 100% happy with the center of the painting, I used may green (Schmincke) and somehow I feel that it does not fit to the blues.
The red car I left a bit unfinished as I did not want too much attraction
on that detail.
Someone on site told me that I didn`t get the color temperature right. I had expected similar comments here because even though there is sun the whole thing is a bit chilly. (which was in accordance with the felt temperature )

The place is in center of our little home town, really nothing spectacular for normal people, but not for painters !

I am a fan of british artist like David Hockney, Graham Sutherland, but my hero is John Piper.

I will be outdoor by foot, bycicle and car from now on every possible afternoon. At present the rape fields get in yellow bloom, which is a wonderful contrast to cherry and apple blossoms. I hope to catch an impression of that during the next 5-7 days.

Martin
