Re: April Figure challenge

Welcome Billby!!!
Hope you are enjoying Wetcanvas
C&C I am seeing a good eye for the body here. I need to ask a question about the face area, what size paper are you working on? The reason I ask is I think you are working in a smaller area than you are comfortable with in the facial features. I myself still have that problem. File 13 has seen many figure drawings of mine for that very reason and you can see it in my current one to the (R) side of the face. Give me an 8x10 area to do a face in and I am fine getting a face in 1sq inch and I start fretting. One trick that helps me some is to crop just the face and resize it to a size I can see.
Hope that helps some.

Re: April Figure challenge

Thanks Jalang ,
I am working directly onto a 20 x 24 streched canvas . I have always struggled with drawing faces but they get better when I get to the paint (oil).

Re: April Figure challenge

LOL - then I spoke outta context, was looking at it like a graphite sketch. What I get for thinking all by my lonesome.
It helps us (me) a little to include a short description with your post .
A beginning sketch, an underglazing, and an ink wash can look a lot alike in a scan/digi shot on the puter.
am sure I could find a few more excuses for my error if I try real hard will be looking forward to seeing the progress

Welcome to WC, the Figure Forum, and the April Challenge Billby2!
You are sure to make many friends here if you actively participate.

Your painting is off to a great start. Do you plan to use color or keep it a B&W like the photo? Thanks for giving the reclining lady a chance.

Re: April Figure challenge

This has been so much fun, and I appreciate the opportunity to meet everyone here.

It is a marvel and a learning experience to see how everyone approaches this subject. I look forward each day to see the thread and the progress.

I think this is a finished product. I don't have the guts to try color or another medium other than graphite. Maybe in the future.

The scan certainly doesn't catch all the little shadow nuances in graphite. Any suggestions? I scan in RGB and change to grayscale after splicing the 2 scans together, using Photoshop 7.

I am in the process of sketching the sitting figure. and will post is also -later.

Re: April Figure challenge

Figure #2. I left the scan in RGB to see how it looks here.

WIP - How many times can one erase the same spot on drawing paper??? I cannot tell you how many times I did just that. The protruding shoulder on the sitting figure really hard to make look good so I gave her an arm. This is where the eraser met the paper a zillion times! Now she looks like she is very uncomfortable with nothing to support her back.

Oh well, "back to the drawing board"

Siberart... Bravo on your drawings! You have been quite busy!
You have rendered the reclining pose especially well.

Re: April Figure challenge

WIP Update:
I glazed a layer of sap green on the BG this morning. I use Liquin to thin my oils for the glazes. It takes about 24 hours for each glaze to dry... so you can envision the slow process involved in layering these colors. The underpainting of the skin tones is not quite dry enough yet to begin glazing over... hopefully I will be able to add my first layer of color on the subject tomorrow.

Re: April Figure challenge

Watching an oil is almost like magic -- I didn't get any drying medium so my first is taking forever to dry, so the next step may be a week away.

Re: April Figure challenge

WIP cont.
I added a glaze of burnt umber to the BG and started glazing the subject. I have added a layer of yellow ochre to the skin areas (more noticeable on the original) and a glaze of burnt sienna on the hair. I'll now wait approx. 24 hours between glazes. This is a slow process but worth it in the end when things finally start coming together.

Re: April Figure challenge

Rosic - I still say you are so patient! She is coming along beautifully as you build up those glazes. I love the choice of colors.

Thanks Pat!

WIP Update: Glazed certain areas of BG with sap green and others with burnt umber. Added a glaze to skin area with a mixture of flake white and burnt sienna. Added layer of burnt umber to hair. I am using Liquin with all my glazes.

I am having a devil of a time photographing this piece so you all can see what it looks like exactly. The glazes are so thin that the camera is still reading the underpainting I guess. ... The subject looks a bit jaundice (yellow) at this point but will come to life after a few more glazes when I am able to incorporate a little cad red.

Thanks for the lesson, I am paying attention. I saw that post in the classical section by (excuse my spelling) Viirannen. What a painter. That underpainting was amazing.

Jack... you are so right... Matt is quite a painter (and dear friend of mine). He has been my mentor when it comes to oils.
Check ot this link by him:

Plus here is a link of mine to show the different stages of glazing.
