Hypertufa Japanese Lantern

Hi Everyone!

I've been getting into my cement bag lately, and loving it. This is a lantern that I made from plastic containers for forms. The lamp section was made from a cranberry juice bottle. The finial on the top was made from a Dixie cup ... i just filled the cup with tufa and then carved it to the shape it is while the tufa was still soft.

I'm looking forward to seeing it outside soon because the weather is finally getting to be more seasonable! Yippee!!!

Marly

BuddyFly,

Very cool lantern! What do you mix with cement to make tufa?

Hi Chuck...

Tufa, or hypertufa, is a combination of a number of things and there are varying recipes. The one I used here is equal parts portland cement/sifted peatmoss/sand/perlite.

It will dry to an almost beige colour so the picture here is a LOT darker than it will be after it dries.

Glad you like it!

Marly

Marly, thanks for the info! I love the texture of this stuff. I think I may give tufa a try.

Marly, I like that lantern. Hmmmm, there's a spot in my yard that would be a good place for one.
