Starting a new acrylic mural on my classroom wall...a tribute to Pearl Harbor.
We say the pledge of allegiance every morning in our school. Students have difficulty really relating to the past, what was in stake of our history to preserve freedom and the debt which our ancestors made in the ultimate sacrifice and so forth.
I decided since I like making our art room different...was to paint a scene of Pearl Harbor under attack. This is the USS Nevada attempting to clear way of the channel of the harbor after being hit with five bombs. Though this being starboad side would be the inaccurate view...I will probably add the USS Arizona. The sky will include a flurry of Val bombers, Kate torpedo bombers and Zeros....
In addition thru an afterschool grant, I ordered a half-dozen 1/48 scale air plane models, and already have students standing in line wanting to make them. I myself picked up the USS Arizona battleship model, and we'll work on 'em in my room a few nights after school. Then, we'll paint 'em up to genuine authenticity...and I will suspend them at various points from the ceiling in my room.
The idea of course being that when students say the pledge from hereon, they will have a visual reminder that the freedom they enjoy came at a price.
I was thinking possibly too of painting in the distance to one side, perhaps the Twin Towers of NYC....
Here is a view from about 30 feet from the wall/counter-

and another a bit closer...I'll add to this thread as this project develops-
