hacel wip

hey folks,
working on this piece on canson, color is called moonstone. it's purdy. the texture and size are preventing me from having visible pencil strokes. i don't mind, i just had different intentions for this. it's graphite; actually the only pencil i've used so far is a 2H and white pastel pencil for the last pic. i put the white at this stage to measure contrast and to make sure i don't overwork the graphite. it's roughly about 10-15 hours into it. thanx fer lookin.

I've enjoyed watching that face become fleshed out and so 3-dimensional.

Re: hacel wip

This has an old world feel....... partially due to the head covering, but mostly due to the choice of paper and the drawing style........ it's spectacular......... and I love your use of the white instead of taking the chance on overworking the graphite....... very well done...... lovely.....

well, this one was'nt too hard to find, she's related. she was taking care of my daughter one night, came home and asked her to sit and have pictures taken. i wanted to do them right away before she lost weight, so her face would look fuller. she posed for this one about 5 years ago, one of my last airbrushed pieces.
i tell all the models where the pics may end up so there's no surprise.

i've only done one other piece on this color, and liked the results. i try choosing the paper based on the picture. i tried doing this same picture on the same paper but in charcoal, and was not happy with the results.

thanx again.

Jimmy, I grabbed your images to study--That is the kind of light handedness that I would like to be able to achieve--I use a pencil like a hammer.

man, that's funny, at least i hope your kidding. i know a ton of people who break the points off mechanical pencils. what i do is work off the tip of the pencil slightly angled. i also hold the pencil at the opposite end, never near the point, if the pencil gets small, i'll use a holder.

Re: hacel wip

Sorry to oooh and aaaah but damn this sings ! Jimmy, your work is an absolute pleasure to look at. I always appreciate the selective focus in your work; it forces a center of interest that never distracts from the gazes you capture.

There is a local pizza restaurant that I eat at in my neighborhood. The cashier is a young girl that looks like she belongs in one of your drawings. I cant help but think of your artwork everytime I see her.

Re: hacel wip

Amazing work. Am trying to follow the way you did the hair: It looks as if you're drawing hatch marks not necessarily following the direction of the hair, and then drawing individual strokes that define some of the individual strands as they lay?

Not a detail here that doesn't look good.
