Fiddle Man Ren faire WIP

Why am I the only one doing WIPs?
I actually think they help me because for one I can step away from the easel, take a photo of what I'm doing, record it on the computer and see it with different eyes, and then write about the steps. It really helps me. You folks should try it!
Anyway, I hope I'm not boring you.
Here is the Fiddle man. I'm listening to violin music while I paint.
The canvas was painted first with leftover paint from my palette, all mixed together. I wasn't sure what I color I was going to come up with but it sure does photograph well.
Covered it with liquin before I started and while the liquin was still wet I sketched in my figure with ultramarine blue, my primary color for shadow. Landmarked some dark places and corners.Made a point of also landmarking the brightess part of his face.

Placed some shadow for his beard, worked on his face and features.

Played with the color of his vest...not too satisfied with it but its a start.

Got some color in the violin. The violin has beautiful shine to it and I'm really going to try and capture it altho right now you only see some base color for it.

This is where I'm at now, wanting to step away and I'd really like to let it dry a bit if I can keep myself away from it.

Comments, remarks, critique welcome...anything. How was your day? what are you working on? How's the weather where you live? Please comment. I love feedback.

Dianne

Hi Dianne

Wow - I love those REDS !!!!! Very nice Dianne. I'm glad you are doing these WIP's !! Saw the joust man , but I know you'll come up with a solution on that one

I can't wait to see this one at it's completion.

We're actually supposed to get snow ! Will be a nice suprise ...

I'm still working on the portrait and trying to decide whether to start over on it - I have a Carravagio to begin in the MOM activity, and I'm working on a painting for my younger daughters room........

Take care,

Tina

Hi Tina
Snow? Where are you???
I thought you were an aussie lassie? Am I wrong..oh goodness. I must be.
The joust fellow will be back in the springtime after the next faire. I had no decent photo and I left all my excuses there on the WOYE thread. I was just getting into something that was too overwhelming for me. In time, in time.
Hope you like this fella. Toning down the reds. Actually the lamp I was taking the photo under sort of accented the reds. This is more true to life.

Don't stop doing your portrait. Its gorgeous.
When I get to a place like that I take a big brush and start doing some of the background and material etc. Pretty soon it all starts coming together much quicker than I thought it would.

And do keep posting. It is simply lovely.

Dianne

Hi D,

I love this guy's face and his expression is so into his music. Looks like you have another winner here.

Did I miss one of yours - the joust fellow? Hope not. Anyways I'm going to enjoy watching your progress with this one.

Regards,

Grace

Another wonderful painting Dianne.

This looks like another winner. Love his race & expression. I would love to go to one of those fairs.

Re: Fiddle Man Ren faire WIP

Hi Dianne, I'm in El Paso. And, well we got a bit of snow up on the mountains, but that was about it. The girls were not happy this morning So far this year, we've only seen a couple of flurries - that's all.

I'll keep working at it - I look at it and think - OK - not a bad start can fix some things - and I look at it again and say no - not good. Who knows. All I can do is keep trying though.

Take care,
Tina

Hi Dianne,
Love your WIPs! You just keep getting better and better.

I know you are still in progress on this, just wanted to say it's so predominantly warm, a touch of cool or blue here and there would be nice, just as an accent.

Keep up the good work.
Ruth

Agreed.

He's coming along. Since I'm not doing the MOM project this month I thought I'd try the glazing thing on one of my own. So each time I stop I'm using liquin after it dries. I really like the results.

I need to take geometry over again. I am terrible with angles especially for inanimate objects. I know the fiddle isn't right but I also know I'll get it sooner or later.
