I like the straight dark (black?) lines, that seem taught in comparison to the loose fat colorful interwoven shapes. Good use of contrasts. It just wouldnt have the same appeal to me with out those straight darker bars. They add more depth as well.

The straight lines came last.

I agree with you Amy, the straight lines came after wondering how to give the image meaning. Funny how contrast or counterpoint does that. Day/Night/ ying/yang/straight/curly. Opposites define each other.
