Wedding Roses

This is almost complete (I hope) but there are a couple of questions I have...the lower right rose needs to overlap the one on the left somehow...but how can I do that now?

Also the upper center rose has more detail...which should I do...bring the others up to that detail or wash that one out? If I can do that!

This is from a pic of my friends bridal bouquet and I'm painting her a surprise watercolor of them...hope she likes it...lol.

Forgot to tell you its 11x14...will be double matted in very soft white with an antique looking silvery frame. Frame has a leaf pattern on it which is really nice with the roses.

If it were mine, I'd be tempted to paint background over the bottom left blossom. That would eliminate the need to overlap it with the one on the right which would be almost impossible in watercolor. Maybe it could become a section of dark leaves??? Then I'd put a bit more detail in the one on the bottom right to bring it forward more. That might not work for you--it's just a possible solution. Carly... from the wedding in Vermont eh? It is lovely...
I agree with Phyllis about more detail in the bottom right rose...and think you could lose the petal in the bottom left. As for overlapping the bottom right one, it can be done believe it or not. You can "fritch" out the background color, and a portion of the petal center bottom. When dry, a very thin coat of gouche (if necessary) then paint it.
Hope this helps... this painting will make a wonderful gift..and the frame sounds ideal.

PS: be careful not to disturb the fibers in the paper too much when you fritch or lift.. or it won't accept the new paint well.

Hey carly,
You could maybe soften the centre top roses edges a bit to push it back a bit. I feel they do look a bit regimented you know one here one there one here etc.But then I suppose weddings arrangements are like that.
Fritch is what you do when you itch,Scratch.

Carly.."fritching" is what I call it when using a "fritch" brush to lift. It can disturb the fibers in the paper...but is effective if not over-done. You can buy fritch brushes in various sizes at cheapjoes or make your own. Take an old stiff oil brush and cut it down to a stub...but again, use it lightly when lifting. I lift color, let dry then go back and lift again...making sure you clean the brush good after each stroke.

Your roses are very nice Carly, I love the colors. I have another suggestion that you might try instead oflifting color, which could possibly end up a mess (I know, I've had it happen). You might try making a very watery solution(like tea) of purple and paint over all but the lower right rose, or try it over just selected roses to give a little more depth here and there. This will "push" the other roses into the background a little. You can do as many layers of the purple as you want. I say use purple because with blue you might end up with a greenish cast.

Carly, I just made the post about the purple glaze over selected roses. Here is an example of what I'm talking about. I think I used purple on this, even though the poor scan makes it look sort of blue. I tried to copy and paste the picture here but it doesn't work, so here is the address of the rose painting.
