i dispose of my old turps by pouring it into a jar with a tight lid & putting it into the rubbish bin.

I drink mine. But I'm from North Carolina and so I don't know any better.

(But seriously folks ... if it's old or so dirty that it can't be used in any mediums, I use it as a brush cleaner till it becomes absolute sludge. Once it's sludge, I too, put it in a sealed container and into the waste.)

Hi.

Take it to your local hardware/paint store, they can take care of it.

You might want to check with your local Government. They may have a collection site. I don't think that turpentine is something that can be legally thrown into the regular trash in most places in the U.S. Solvents such as this can be harmful to the environment, and in large amounts can contaminate the ground water. Since the nearest potential habitable planet is light years away, I try to do my part to protect the environment, even though I/m not a tree hugger.

At least in Sweden, you can take it to the recycling station...

...even though we do drink it too!

where we live, it is supposed to be disposed of separately.

I have to take it to the dump labelled

*kinda like motor oil, it seems*

It's probably common knowledge but I'll mention it anyway

If you have dirty turps you can just put them away and after a while the dirty stuff will have settled on the bottom of the jar/can or whatever it is in. The crystal clear turps on top can be poured into another jar and be used again. This re-use will save both money and the environment.

Of course, if you're like me then you won't have that problem because you would simply forget about the jar and when you'd find it again the problem has literally evaporated

I put mine into small glass vials, and sell it on Ebay as genuine Oliver Reed urine samples.

I dunno ... my cousins in North Wilksboro used to make some stuff that tasted worse than turpentine. As a matter of fact, you could probably chase it with turps to get rid of the after-taste and put the fire out.
