Well here it is.
Surface: Strathmore 500 Series Illustration board
Paints: Golden Airbrush Acrylic
Dimensions: 18 X 24 (the odd dimensions were chosen to work with the future framing)

the paints chosen for the background were phthalo green and hansa yellow medium. I mixed all colors right in the paint cup by adding drops at random and gently swirling. I allowed the colors to flow at random on the board and varied what I was painting but what color was being sprayed. I do this to maintain a random effect. I also work all areas of the board at the same time and never in just one place for this reason. When I was finish with each stage I clear with one coat of GAC 500.

Backgrounds can be tedious and boring. This one still has a long way to go before I can start the actual subject.

I am photographing using 35mm, stages will be posted together but I will try my best to move things along. I also do photography so this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. The biggest problem now is simply finding the time to paint.

I have seen this Gac 500 in art supplies stores, but have never used it before. What does it do?

Penny, I think you are off to a great start! This is looking fantastic! These are great photo's. Can't wait to see more!

GAC 500 is cool. It is to acrylic what inner-clear is to automotive. It is a hard clear coat but unlike varnishes and clear coats it has the same texture as the paints it's just clear. I am using it between coats for a few reason. Because of the two kids, dog and the fact that this is way to involved than to be able to finish in a day it helps protect it. I do not erase back to the board so this is not a problem. Also, and this is the biggest reason of all, I am looking to achieve the same effect as inner-clear and multiple layers of clear. The background will show great depth of field and to add to the depth you will be seeing it through all of the clear. I am however only shooting one thin coat per layer. I hope I said that "clear" enough.

Rabbits, no Sam,

I have the worlds weakest stomach and although my dog gives me great reference pictures disembowelment is not one I want LOL

Well, here goes. I’m sorry it has taken so long to post the next set of pictures. I took the film in on Friday and I took it down on Saturday to be developed but due to the last snow storm… anyway here they go.

I put the second and third layer of tree trunks in with a paintbrush and add details with the airbrush. Since I end up doing so much reworking of them with the airbrush I doubt I will use the paintbrush again on this project.

At this point I’m happy, ignoring certain areas that are already slated to change. My husband has commented that he would like to enter the painting and take a nap so I think that I am creating the effect I am looking for. I am concerned however of the stagnation that will invariably occur if I continue with just trees. I have gone out and taken a few more reference pictures and I believe that a long forgot and unkempt stonewall is in order. Because the eventual subject of the painting will be a wolf I think that it will be a fitting symbol of the remnants of man and the re-integration of what man has endangered.

This is how the piece stands at the moment. I doubt that I will have much time if any to work on it again until after Christmas. I also have a few other pieces that I must complete along the way.

Thanks for the updates Penny only you know what this is going to look like in the end but that big tree right in the middle is looking out of place right now but in the end it might not....

This is looking so great Penny! Are you planning to place anything else in the background? Maybe a stream, with some large rocks or something! Am I to understand that you have mostly freehanded what you have done so far?
I really can't wait to see the finished painting!

What I have planned so far is a stone wall, a few more layers of trees to get my way to the forground and of course the eventual wolf. I'm winging this painting and planning as I go, I have had a finished painting in my head since before I started but yes, I am building it as I go and yes, with the exception of the last few tree trunks base coat this has been all freehand airbrush, no masks of anykind, that's the reason it has been so time consuming.

The tree is not out of place, the trees get larger as I work forward, the plan of the background has always been to achieve depth in perspective.

Sam, keep the chainsaws away, PLEASE, these are taking long enough to grow and besides, that isn't a good chainsaw anyway.
