TJs first pastel portrait
I've played with pastels many many moons ago. Never had a whole lot of sucess and never a human subject. Think I even gave the kids those pastels years ago.
So while I'm not and expert at pastels types, I can totally relate to calling these pastels yummy...
Canson Mi Tientes left over from my pencil work (ack hated paper)
Terry Ludwigs portait pastels... Thanks Terry, look what you've started!
While I lost the likeness in this portriat, I did get the expression......LOL. I'm just calling this one a test piece, not near done, and i'm sure this is as far as this one will go. I'm eagar to get started on a new one!
C&C welcome
TJ

Can't speak for likenesses but you surely have a mood going here and the portrait is excellent for itself.

Expression is right! I like the unfinished look of it... wouldn't change a thing.

All I can say is "WOW". Hope you'll be showing more of your work! Flip that Canson over and try the smoother side...or even better, purchase some Wallis sanded paper! You'll fall in love with that stuff.

This is beautiful, TJ. You've achieved a remarkably smooth effect considering you used the 'ack' side of the Mi-Teintes Can you tell/show us how many colours (and which ones) you used?

Hello. I recall you and your amazing work at CP forum! I couldn't stick with them, because of the amount of time it takes to build layers. Pastels, you will find out is more immediate and workable as you go and you can get a little more impressionistic as well.
I love your portrait and I agree, it looks great unfinished and the rough background is a nice contrast in texture to the smoother features of your subject. Show us more!

Thanks for the great welcome you guys!
I appreciate the words of encoragement, LOL. Yeah these are so much faster and so far pretty fun. I think I could be hooked. Hey Carly I'll try flippin this ickky paper over and give it another shot. As far as the wallis goes, thats what I use for my cps! (the one in my tinyhead is on wallis) I'm eager to learn whats what so I can try it on the "good stuff" . E-J the ack side? rofl a perfect name! Uhmm the pastels are from Terry Ludwigs portriat sampler, and I'm so sorry I have no idea what the names are - they just came tucked in a cool box, but the colors have no labels. I really had to just play with them to see what was what.
Thanks for the comments all of you, I'll be lurking around (cuz I have no idea on pastels, and really feel like a noobie) and when I get this latest CP commission finished I'll be back!
Yes newly pastel addicted.....hmmmmmm

TJ - aren't pastels wonderful? This is really a beautiful portrait! I have a feeling that no matter what medium you would try, the results would be awesome!
