Bison WIP

Today I started painting a bison on an 18 x 24" canvas.
According to the Canadian Bison Association these giants of the grasslands survived the ice age but almost died out in the 1800's thanks to European settlers (from 60 million down to 1,000). Thanks to conservation their numbers have risen. They are rugged beauties who can endure our harsh climate and although gentle on the outside can suddenly charge if provoked. Personally, I think they're awesome but I'm not too sure anyone would want to be confronted with this face looking directly at you.
I began today by blocking in major areas with acrylic with a suggestion of where the detail is going to go. I'm challenging myself with the fur most of all and welcome feedback.

Re: Bison WIP

Thanks Penny & Federico - having companions on the artistic journey makes it even more fun

Here I have started to apply oil paint. All these different kinds of fur textures are a great challenge for me. I have to resist laying on the paint too thick and need to be patient for it to dry between layers. As an alla prima painter this is a big challenge for me as I normally like to get it all done in one shot if I can.

I am using titanium white, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, black with Liquin and some of Bob Ross' medium because I can't get my linseed tin to open. Of course the acrylic colours underneath are a motley crew of craft paint!

Re: Bison WIP

You're handling this challenge masterfully, Yvonne! The wooly fur looks so deep and textured already. Keep up the great work!

Re: Bison WIP

Thank you Jenna and Robert Thank you everybody for your support.

The colours below are actually closer to how it looks - I snapped it using more lighting. One day I will get my act together and create properly lighted photos with correct white balance etc. At this stage I couldn't be bothered.

I'm getting really close to finished. I've reached a point of frustration so this is where I need to just get away from it, let it dry out, let me forget about it for a while and then come back to it with fresh eyes. If I mess with it now I may ruin some things so...

Re: Bison WIP

Terrific painting Yvonne. You have really nailed the power of the animal. The curly hair is very well painted and the soft , muted backgound works so nicely against the strong painting of the bison.

Completed Painting

I realized what this painting was missing. To balance the power and strength of the bison I added wild mini daisies (fleabane). Bisons are gentle creatures (unless provoked). He is as likely to be curious about them and fascinated with them, as he would be considering whether or not to eat them.

So it's done, signed and will get a coat of varnish in a couple of weeks. Thank you everybody for joining me in this painting journey. Your encouragement and feedback mean a lot to me!!!
