Re: P&I Forum Monthly Challenge - July

"Moon on Ragatz Lane, Napa CA" providing - or at least reflecting - light, at night, as seen from my - rural - front yard. Graphite sketch with pen-and-ink on 60# (96 gsm) 6" x 8-1/2" (~15 x 22 cm) drawing paper, using an Ooly fine-nib fountain pen (purchased new for $6 several years ago in Murphys, California, either at Sustenance Book Store or Maisieblue; it was so long ago I can't remember which) and home-mixed "sepia" (ok, that's a stretch) ink consisting of about 75% Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Red and 25% Parker Super-Quink Permanent Black.

Probably more than anyone wants to know...

And yes, those are supposed to be trees (Coast Redwoods and Monterey Pines, along with a modicum of artistic license, fwiw) in front of the moon. (It's a slow day, here on Ragatz Lane...)

You've created a beautiful drawing Skip, I'm not sure if I find it ominous or romantic but it's certainly arresting.

Skip, that's beautiful. I like the style of it, it reminds me of one of my favourites, Emily Carr.

Re: P&I Forum Monthly Challenge - July

This is something hidden in my basement. It's a cellar spider. Harmless but they do like to make a lot of webs. Micron pen.

For next month, my suggestion is Water!

Re: P&I Forum Monthly Challenge - July

For those who may not be acquainted with the work of Emily Carr (Canadian, 1871-1945), she is closely associated (although never formally a member) with the Canadian Group of Seven (Franklin Carmichael, A. Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J. E. H. MacDonald, Lawren Harris and Fredrick Varley), along with Tom Thompson who is acknowledged to be a - if not the - key influence for the Group of Seven, although having died under somewhat mysterious circumstances a couple of years before the group was formed in 1920.

I first became aware of the Group of Seven while visiting the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, although I believe the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto have larger collections, especially of Tom Thompson’s work. Thompson’s “The West Wind” and, to a lesser extent, his “The Jack Pine” can be seen reflected in the untitled WIP shown below, that I’ll complete as soon as I resolve how to handle the remainder of the foreground, the middle-ground water and far hills (and perhaps boost the tree foliage).

Problems, problems...

Virginia, that's the most beautiful spider I've seen! ( I'm quite tolerant of my house spiders too!)

Skip, having first 'met' the Group of Seven via our Acrylics forum challenge a couple of years ago, I can see the influence in your subject above!
Your tree looks very impressive, even unfinished!

Skip, your drawings are memsmerizing, I love the group of 7 and have done a couple week long retreats learning about them and attempting to paint like the group of 7, certainly harder than it looks

Re: P&I Forum Monthly Challenge - July

Went outside this afternoon and did this quick contour drawing of these fragrant beauties I have growing in my garden. I pick a bouquet every other day and they make the house smell so good.

Next months suggestion: feathers

Re: P&I Forum Monthly Challenge - July

VanAndrew, your cat is awesome and I can imagine it winding around your legs.
Magdalene, those eyes are certaining arresting. Great job.
Potterspink, your water pump brought back memories for me too. Great style.
Skip, your trees do remind me of Thompson's pine trees. I love the way you have done your drawings. They flow so nicely.
Virginia, I really like the way you've handled your spider. So simple and the shadows are perfect.
Bonnie, you've been busy! Nice work. We have a bird feeder just like the one in your first drawing and the birds love it.

Bonnie, very pretty selection of beings and objects from your journeys to friends! I like that tree especially!

Sanlynn - a beautiful, sensitive drawing of the sweetpea.
