Morning routine. (x-post acrylics)

Well started last Sunday late and could not get back to it until Friday. Did some touch ups over weekend stuff. It maybe done. Acrylic 14" by 20" Morning workouts at Keeneland race track spring 2019. Figuring out Thoroughbred anatomy with these painting. The different breeds have such different proportions and how the rider sits and where. The body language of horse and rider and how they interact with other mounds is very interesting and will take a while, maybe longer to study. Combining all that and developing a painting also is great fun/work. C&C welcomed.

Very good, I like reading your notes above and seeing the amount of work you put into your painting. Keep them coming

Tough subject Mike and hats off to you for your perserverence. This is great. I like the colours and the movement. Just a small observation. The rider on the front horse seems very large. If he/she stood next to the horse, she would tower above it and it is a pretty big horse!!!

Re: Morning routine. (x-post acrylics)

Chammi the rider is a thin girl but she looks long. Here is resource pic and my painting along side. In both I took the rider a part and stood her straight next to horses Mine looks maybe short but I have back legs lower so almost the same. All the other riders are more jockey size so she seems real long and her stirrups hang down like a normal rider would have them, stretching the leg. Hey she looked long to me too thats why I liked that combo. It also shows horses being worked with a girl that would not jockey, but still works the horse. Not bad rendering as I had computer monitor at right angle to painting and in front of it so I could not see both at the same time! Yes I made neck and head of horse a little different to give it some style. Thanks for looking so close.

Love the subject and your colors are great! They are a study for sure. Difficult and interesting - I think you are doing very well and hey - the photo is just a photo. You can make it whatever you want! I grew up 5 minutes from Saratoga Racetrack and must pass at least 200 horses on my way to work each day. I have sold several horse paintings and honestly, there are only 2 that I would want back for myself. I am going to keep practicing and painting them. Thanks for the inspiration!! I will check back on your work too!

Looks nice.. Just a note... I'm confident the issue is not the horse but the ground... I mean the direction of the strokes change the perspective...

Re: Morning routine. (x-post acrylics)

You are making a splendid job of these horse paintings and I admire the way you are looking at the anatomy of these Thoroughbred Horses.

You are quite correct and yes the Thoroughbred Horse's body and legs is like a stylized athletes body...sleek and long and built for speed! All horse breeds have slightly different body mass etc. It would take a lifetime to study each horse breed, and of course pony breeds are different altogether.
(I do think maybe you have lengthened the neck and bent arch of the horses neck a bit too arched, making it look more like and Arab....but that's just being picky, and it's your painting so you can do whatever you want to with it, so don't worry about it!!!!)

There's no-one more intensely critical than another horse person about painting/drawing horses! I've drawn and painted horses all my life and still don't get them right, so you need to congratulate yourself on making a great job of your paintings! I love them, so do please keep them coming!

Really like this.Reminds me of my childhood when I regularly saw race horses being exercised.
