February 2019 Watercolor Challenge - Wedgwood Tea Set

On a recent visit to the Wedgwood Museum at Stoke-on-Trent, I stopped off in the cafe for a cuppa. It was served in Wedgwood china (of course) with a gold plated spoon on a shiny tray. I sketched the tea tray while waiting for my friends to show (7x5 sketchbook).

I think you will have fun painting this, I have put two pictures in the Reference Image Library and one was one of the references in the 18/01 Weekend Drawing Event. I combined the two for my painting and finished my WDE painting later after starting it in class Roughly 12x9 on Saunders Waterford 200lb rough. Sorry about the blurry photos.

Have fun!

Re: February 2019 Watercolor Challenge - Wedgwood Tea Set

My mother would have loved this. I have some Wedgwood china cups and saucers that were hers from years back in my china cabinet. I will try painting this in memory of her...and it will be a challenge!
I like your painting with the lovely gold tones...a warm cup of tea coming up and a gold spoon to stir! Nice reflections and shadows. Thanks Doug.

I could do better, I painted it with the biscuit before I had pored the tea. I should have put tea in the cup.

Doug, nice idea for this month. Love tea cup servings and will try but it'll be a bit of a challenge.

Very nicely done, Merriweather, the pattern is not as complicated as it looks and an impression of the pattern is good enough. You did a better job of the spoon and plate than I did.

Thanks Doug,

I could make out a man holding a bird on his outstretched hand? But it was a difficult challenge as in colours to mix.

cheers

9"x12" Langdon Premier rough (This is new to me and not my first choice of paper)

Here's my stab at this. As usual something of a tricky one but I was pretty pleased in the end. Those patterns are definitely tricky. I tried to keep them loose but erred just on the side of sloppy.

Thanks again Doug.

Difficult paper, well done.

Welcome to the forum. There's a list of challenges at the top of the forum.

Very nice Renz. I've never come across that paper before. Is it tricky to work with?

Re: February 2019 Watercolor Challenge - Wedgwood Tea Set

My attempt at the Wedgwood tea service. Struggled a bit with the green of the teacup, and the reflections on the metal surfaces. I kept the pencil lines to give a clear line at the edge of the table, and to separate some of the white objects.

6x8 inch hot pressed Fluid block.
