I'm stuck

Here is a nude in progress with a few more layers to go on the figure but what to do with the background? Does it need another compositional element? I was inspired by Gauguin's "Nevermore" and I have been trying to "dream" up something happening in the background but I'm coming up empty. I should do some sketches....but I've been lazy and am having a hard time rustling up motivation since the gallery I have been showing at is closing soon. I think I'm grieving.

I don't think there's much need for anything in the background...
I think that any red/yellow back there will ruin it.

Maybe you could have the blues fade to black... Could emphasize the character more.

Thanks Nathan.
I 've been working on her since I first posted, I feel a little more confident although I still am not sure what to do with that background. It may not need anything but I WANT something.

Sandy,

I do think *something* needs to happen in the background-- some element. maybe something that might echo the strong darks on the left side? Or some element of pattern?

Not sure, but *something.*

Nice looking though!

Yes. *something*

Normally I trust the universe to guide me. But it has been quiet lately. The *something* in the background is still buried. I may just have to wait and pay attention.

Since Gaugin was the inspiration, how about taking it up a step?

I've attached a few images using background elements from various Gaugin paintings. I was surprised by how well they fit right in.

I pushed the image elements into the background (and your original color background) to keep focus on the figure.

Love your figure work!!! I vote for just darker cools in the background, maybe not even use the purple, just keep to blues and greens, like some of the ideas with the forest, but think more detail, figures, etc. might take away from the figure. Thanks for letting us see your work!!

Talking ohhhhh ....

I can't WAIT to see what you do with the wind in your sails!!

Did I mention that I loved your mangos? hehe.... how much would a piece like the mango and nipple sell for?

(I can't buy it, in American dollars my NZ ones don't add up to very much, although I'm hyped because Zotma and I are going to swap some work! *grin* so happy... anyways,... I'm just interested.)

Thank you Deeva

Yes that wind was blowing today! And she is looking wonderful but not ready yet....soon I hope. The mango and the nipple are, alas, no longer for sale. My mate prefers that painting in our bedroom...

ohhh I can't wait...

Show me, show me!!

I love it when an artist can 'feel' that the work is going to be good.... progress pics?

I can understand why your mate loved it, as soon as I saw it I loved it, I love your colours and you have brilliant line.
