Article: A New Direction In Art Education
Hi Gang!
I really enjoyed reading this article. It was surprising to discover Andy Warhol's support of the NY Academy as well as the National Endowment of the Arts negative position in 1988 regarding traditional academic training for artists.
The article also mentions that a lot of the major ateliers are fairly new; nice to see that our options for training are growing.
Any thoughts to share?

Re: Article: A New Direction In Art Education
Here's a thought: I want classical training!!
Great link Vince.
It might just be that I'm looking in all the right places, but it certainly seems there's quite a rebirth going on right now. I agree with Warhol's sentiment as described in the article
I think it's quite true that, "the course of art history would be changed if one thousand students could be taught Old Master drawing and painting techniques," but there's always been a scattering of masters around, and in the past, an ignored or attacked abundance. There's always been, thankfully, a handfull around capable of producing such works and preserving the techniques, but now there being well-received -- that's doubly exciting. If appreciation of master-quality work is back in style, then it won't be long till this same thirst is evident in the other arts (literature, music). Regardless of whatever the rest of the world is doing, I'll always be enjoying the finest in art, literature, and music, but the more market there is for such things, the more of it there will be me to enjoy.
Now, if only there were suddenly so many ateliers out there that they started taking on new students for free as a promotional gimmick -- ahh, to dream.

Vince, thanks for the article.
Interesting premise of "1000 artists" trained in classical art changing the direction of art.
Some beautiful work illustrated in the article. Oh, I wish I weren't in the twilight of my life!!! I'd love to be able to take some classical training. Oh, well, I'll just keep sketching and working on my own, learning a little bit at a time.

YLCIA - You're welcome!
Hey Pencil. They look like they have an awesome program with classes DAILY! Its in Southern Cal which is too far for me to go for a class but close enough to put this link in my bookmarks! I'll keep my eyes open for workshops since San Diego is supposed to worth a visit.

Magnificent
Vincent,
You continue to amaze me with your yearning to absorb all that is classical. Your passion is inspiring. Thank you so much for the link to the article and for introducing us (well, me anyway!) to the New Bohemia website in general. I have yet another website to explore and drool over! Not only is the artwork on the site amazing, I am listening to some of the music of Rene Gruss (a link from the New Bohemia site) that is wonderful. Since I'm at work and not supposed to be online reading articles about art (shhhhh! don't tell anyone! ) I've printed out the article to enjoy. I have a feeling I'll be buying a Rene Gruss cd, too.
Thank you for sharing your passion with us.
Susan

Hi Opie!
So happy to see your post here! That site was fun to surf around and I am glad you enjoyed it. It looks like you discovered more about the site than I have. I'll have to check out the Rene Gruss when I get a chance. Take care!

If you do not have the opportunity to attend a school for day-to-day classes, I had the pleasurer of studying with these three fine artist this summer.
I know Bill is teaching his last workshop at the Scotsdale Artist School in April. Marvin teaches at SVA in NYC and is planning a workshop in NC and Atlanta this summer. Tim teaches a lot of workshops, some under the Dick Blick offering. He will be in Indiana this summer.
