Re: What are you listening to . . . (reprise)

When I'm in the studio, I usually just have the radio onÖ either on a Mouldy-Oldie Rock station, or the Concert Programme (classical).

If I choose to put CDs onÖ well, it really could be anything at all: Debussy, Green Day, Beatles, Strauss, Foo Fighters, Joe PassÖ sometimes load five unrelated discs and hit 'random'Ö

I'm no particular fan of Reggae, but I've found that one of the very best 'get you up' records is 'Journey To Addis' by Third World. Lively, man!

Long term listening to Glenn Goulds recordings of Bach's Goldberg Variations.

On lighter note there's a lot of golden oldies - The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, The Kinks, Ry Cooder - it goes on and on. Also lots of random folk music. Recent discoveries include and ensemble called Ex Cathedra.

I listen to something from the Kinks every day.

The Kinks are very under rated.

That is a GREAT version, Blue! (Have you seen Casey Abrams do "Stacey's Mom"?)

My absolute favorite though.....an a cappella cover of Radiohead's "Creep"

Re: What are you listening to . . . (reprise)

Never got into The Kinks.

And I hate the Ramones.

I've been listening to Chopin, Brian Eno, Elvis Costello, and early Genesis.

Re: What are you listening to . . . (reprise)

Some friends and I went to Ramones concert and left halfway through. They were so messed up on something that it was unlistenable.

My recent discovery is yMusic.

yMusic is a sextet chamber ensemble from New York City. Consisting of a trumpet, flute, clarinet, violin, viola, and cello.

I saw them with Paul Simon on SNL. Once again, thank you Paul Simon. If you have eclectic tastes and have been getting bored of the same old same old, give them a try. Just wonderful.

Re: What are you listening to . . . (reprise)

These days itís mostly various versions of Handelís Messiah and Bachís Christmas Oratorio, interspersed with Viennese Waltz music...

For those who are fond of Bach, thereís an NYC radio station, WKCR, 89.9 FM, that plays a week of Bach this time of year. I listen to bits and pieces via its streaming service, via its web page here:

https://www.cc-seas.columbia.edu/wkcr/

Unfortunately I canít stream that to my sound system (yet), because that requires an Apple-TV thingy, so for me itís only on my iPad, which leaves a bit to be desired w/r to sound quality.

Cheers,
Chris

Hey you have good taste Chris!

We just saw the NY Philharmonic and the Westminster Choir do Handel's Messiah. The counter tenor was, of course, a man and he sounded like a soprano. Some notes came out of him that were like bells. But I might have fallen asleep. I must confess.

And speaking of Bach. I was just listening to my old copy of Bachbusters. An incredible CD of Bach on synthesizer. The precision is remarkable. And short enough pieces that it's stays interesting.

As far as the laptop music. If you use an external DAC into the stereo the quality goes up a lot. And if you want the ultimate in sound and your system is high fidelity, go with the DAC and Tidal premium lossless streaming. Like having 4 million CDs in your collection.

Re: What are you listening to . . . (reprise)

Thanks John! And I am a little jealous of your visit to the Philharmonic but if I went Iíd probably get thrown out; in the studio I can sing along quite happily if badly and inappropriately to the whole thing. Itís a hard habit to break!

I did get the connectivity figured out - in a low tech way. I have a desktop PC with Chrome in another room, and I can use that to cast anything on that browser to the sound system (using that term very loosely ) in the studio. Itís a little lossy but I can live with that. Now Iíve got Bachís St. John Passion streaming in. Itís the 1749 version, apparently after this WKCR is going to do the 1724 or 1725 version.

I think this goes 24/7 for this week, in which case Iím not going to get much sleep

Cheers,
Chris

Nothing yet. Still haven't decided what I am in the mood for. Something to go with late fall and winter landscapes.
