Roadside
Painting in the "selective start method", coined by Richard Schmid, is quite a challenge. There is no "Block in" of color or value. One starts with a toned background and then finds a spot near the middle and works from that spot outward; each area completed in its own right and then continuing to the next.
I find that a good initial drawing helps.
16x20 oil and graphite on hardboard. Cheers, Derek

Re: Roadside
I often paint this way myself--but it's hard to pull off without experience and without a mental value plan in mind.
Looks like a nice job. the foreground bricks are out of perspective. I personally would allow some "light holes" in the mass of tree shadow and I would cast another tree shadow over the foreground area to balance it out and help lead the viewer into the painting, but that's up to you.
Nice!

Re: Roadside
Thanks John, I appreciate that.
Sl : gentle rule reminder, I did not ask for C&C. This may be in a show.
We can agree to disagree. There are no "bricks"? in this road. Only dirt and tire marks exactly as I saw them. I taught perspective for many years and I've been painting sky holes for many years as well and again I paint em' as I see em". I'm glad you stopped by.

Re: Roadside
A note to my good friends: I haven't been around lately due to a pinched nerve Cervical radiculopathy, in the neck which left my arms and hands numb and I could hardly hold a brush. I've been in PT and hopefully getting better. This is my first painting after about two months.....whew. I feel rusty.
Lifting heavy furniture in my studio was a bad move.

Re: Roadside
Very nice.
I must say I'm a big fan of the "progress pics".
I'm sure many others similarly appreciate seeing a painting in its various stages.

Wonderful job, very realistic. The colors are so beautiful and the richness of detail is incredible. I'm a big fan of your work.
I'm sorry to hear that you've been sick. I'll pray for you, my friend.

Re: Roadside
Both hands/arms had issues??
I had very a bad Repetitive motion injury in the past, semi chronic, but mild now, learned a lot along the way.. lots of DIY/self care tips..
sometime Drs mis diagnose cervical /neck unless it actually shows as a cause on imaging..
If PT does not help fully , or even worse makes you hurt more...seek out more knowledgeable providers, as some are much better than others..
If your recovery stalls PM me & I will give you links that I found to be helpful.

Re: Roadside
Nicely done DCam.
I used to do all my work that way when I was young and hadn't been "edumacated" in art yet. Even portraits. I would start with the right eye and paint out from there. In some ways I liked my work better back then before I was told how I should paint. Interestingly after reading Schmid's book a few months ago I decided to try the process anew and have been enjoying it despite the challenges.
I hope you heal quickly. I am still recovering from some lower back damage that goes back 3 months.

Re: Roadside
Wonderful work Derek, I was wondering why we weren't seeing a painting every few days from you .
Really hope you're on the mend and feel better soon. If it's any consolation, you've not lost a step in terms of painting.

Your painting is very beautiful, the process could certainly be used as a tutorial.

Re: Roadside
As always Derek, your work is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing this method with us. This reminds me of a warm summer day in the cool shade of lush green trees.
Keeping you in prayer for a complete recovery soon.
