Three Lonely Men

Fairey Swordfish returns from anti Submarine patrol. They took off from a tiny moving ship, now they have to make their way back to a tiny moving ship... Without radio!.

You've caught the lonely mood well Jim. I like the light spilling down through the sky.

Re: Three Lonely Men

Way back in the ninties; I endeavoured to capture the same storyline after reading about an RN Swordfish damaged in battle in Italy returning to Malta alone, struggling to maintain height overhead a lonely sea.

I still have the painting tucked away somewhere.

Re: Three Lonely Men

Nice one Chas, I like the sea reaching up to grab them!.
My inspiration was a sortie by a Swordfish where during the flight, the wind speed and direction changed. This meant that they would runout of fuel before the reached the carrier. An Escort was sent back along the convoy's track but no trace was ever found. Similar incidents were quite common, although the old Pegasus engine was was reliable (sometimes arriving back with cylinders shot away) nothing is perfect.
