Redwinged Blackbird

15x22 watercolor on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper from one of my bird photos taken in New Mexico. These RWBs love wet marshy areas with cattails.
C&C welcome

Re: Redwinged Blackbird

A lovely painting of a bird showing its habitat too. I really like the way it blends in, with the wing matching the cattails. I love the texture of the background rock and the foreground plants have a lot of interest.

Re: Redwinged Blackbird

Kay- I love the realism of this piece! As in nature, I was caught up in the warmth of the sunlight, the cool breeze through the cattails and shadows cast across the cliff in the background. The Blackbird was the last thing to catch my eye. What a great surprise! I can just imagine sitting up against an old Greyback/Alligator Juniper or mighty Pinon Pine and taking in this scene.

What part of New Mexico did you take your reference photo? Great work and thank you for sharing.

Rob

Re: Redwinged Blackbird

Thank you all! I was interested in your feedback mainly because I've entered it in three separate watercolor society shows and it has been rejected again and again. I like it for the reasons Rob mentioned. Ruidoso, NM is where I shot photos, and it is in the southeast part of the state (west of Roswell, and north of El Paso TX). Lately I've taken elk herd photos that are interesting.

Re: Redwinged Blackbird

Nice painting. It took me a couple seconds to find the bird though. Its kind of hidden in the shadow of the rock.

Beautiful! Love all the textures you have in this- the rocks are really wonderful. You must have spent a long time planning out your painting strategy with wc!

Re: Redwinged Blackbird

You voiced your concern about being rejected from the Art Shows. Squint you eyes real tight. What stands out? The white rock in the middle. You don't see the bird or most of the other details. If the rock was lighter in color behind the bird it would stand out more. I am not an art juror, but that is what stands out to me.

Re: Redwinged Blackbird

Kay, it also took me a while to spot the bird but I rather like the fact that it disappeared into the background. This is very different to your normal watercolour style. It is a lot more structured and detailed. I am interested to know what made you change. Difficult to understand why it was not accepted as it is a lovely work.

Re: Redwinged Blackbird

Thank you all. Well, I painted it just like my photograph was with the shadows as they are. For shows I usually enter realism which takes longer to paint as you know.

Re: Redwinged Blackbird

The foliage is superb, and I'd like the bird a bit closer, although that is just a personal statement which has nothing to do with composition per se.

Re: Redwinged Blackbird

I love it, as with others I did not see the bird at first. Maybe change the title and see if it is still rejected??
