WIP - NY Central

Working on a 44" x 34" for myself. I found the rust and wear to be a challenge, to depict as realistically as possible. Still have to add flaking paint and rust patches. Going to paint a muted NY skyline in the background, with moderate cloud cover and the Hudson river in the foreground.

Been fighting a throat fungus and a cold for eight weeks, now, so the drawing sat for a long time, before I could transfer it to canvas a couple of weeks ago.

Re: WIP - NY Central

Thanks all! I am a fan too of the rust, dust and neglect. Shadwell, that SP loco scheme is very, very popular in the Ebay slide world. They call it the 'Black Widow' scheme and a slide recently sold for nearly $142! Interestingly enough, it was a Cotton Belt loco that was painted in this scheme. Nice job on the weathering there too, Shadwell, the SP was famous for their dirty, well-used looking locomotives!

Re: WIP - NY Central

those are really detailed models and the weathering is very realistic - particularly given the scale they are built to. Good restoration work.

I confess that I just build the models to the instructions and add a little detail, I rely on the artistic process of a painting to introduce realism like weathering and other marks!

Re: WIP - NY Central

Shadwell, amazing weathering and detail work! I really like the very realistic mud and snow 'splash' on the lower part of the MoPac loco! Any rail fan, can look at these and instantly recognize the legitimacy of the weathering, dirt and rust on these freight loco's.

Many eminent rail artists focus on the 'glory' side of the American Railroad story, with depictions of bright, shiny passenger trains, such as the Super Chief, the Sunset Limited and other prominent trains of the past.

Me? I'll take the hard working EMD SD-40's, GP-9's, Alco FA's and Baldwin FM's over the 'glory' side of rail art.

Re: WIP - NY Central

Nice work there on the locos. I kid myself somewhat that I will do HO scale again sometime. I have a lot of track and some stock. No place to put up a decent sized layout. Would need to declutter my daughter for that!

Yep - those are first class examples of weathering that only years of grimy wet grey days in Manchester could give you the knowledge for .
Excellent .
