June 2016 Fur, Scales and Feathers Challenge

Hello all Welcome to the June Challenge!

It is my turn and pleasure to host this months challenge, and I've chosen a theme of Australian animals. I'm from England originally, but I'd wanted to live in Australia ever since I was 15. When I was 22 I came here on a working holiday visa (and when I was 23 I phoned my mum and told her I was staying) It's been ten years now and the wildlife here never fails to amaze me, from the brightly coloured birds and bobtails that visit our garden, to the kangaroos you can't fail to see whenever you drive out of the city / suburbs.

All images are my own, I hope that you will enjoy and have fun with them - and I look forward to seeing your creations for those of you that join in! If you require a larger reference photo, please PM me and I'm happy to send it.

Guidelines for the Challenges
Please read carefully - makes everything more exciting!!

On the first of each month a reference photo or photos will be posted in a thread entitled Fur, Scales and Feathers Challenge. These are the reference photos for the Challenge, so please use them to do your artwork from.

Artwork can be any size on any surface and in any medium.

Each member taking part can create a work using the chosen reference/s
(whole or cropped).

ON THE 20TH OF EACH MONTH participants will upload their interpretation of the reference for comments. PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORK BEFORE THE 20TH .

It is much more fun when everyone uploads more or less at the same time.

At the end of the month, the thread/discussion will be closed and a new challenge will begin.

Re: June 2016 Fur, Scales and Feathers Challenge

Thanks Robert, I'm glad you enjoyed the photos and look forward to seeing what you and others do with them You're absolutely right, quokkas are (on the whole) incredibly friendly, and they always look like they're smiling. My son adores them, we don't get over to Rottnest very often, but the main attraction for him when we do is that he gets to make friends with these beautiful creatures!

For anyone not familiar with them, they live in abundance on islands off coastal Western Australia, and they carry their babies in pouches (like kangaroos) which is cuteness overload!

Wow, such a fine collection of wildlife pictures. I love Koalas. I was told by a wildlife expert that they feast on Eucalyptus leaves that leaves them drunk and asleep for long hours. I found that amusing.

Jess - are Quakkas like Wallabies? They look similar?

Re: June 2016 Fur, Scales and Feathers Challenge

Hydie - I've heard similar theories about why koalas sleep so long, but also that eucalyptus leaves provide low nourishment value (i.e. so they're only eating enough to stay awake a few hours, also accounting for the 20+ hours a day they sleep). I prefer the drunk version though I'm a big fan of koalas too, but funnily they're not as soft and fluffy as they appear, I got to stroke one years ago when I was on a day tour and visited a wildlife park in Sydney, and their fur is coarse like sheep wool.

Thanks Kay and Chammi. Yes, the quokkas are proving popular, it must be their cheeky, happy little faces. That's okay, a gallery full of quokkas would be a fine thing to look upon

Viv - Yes, you're correct, I just looked this up and they're classed as macropods so related to both wallabies and kangaroos. Apparently they can also climb trees which I think is fantastic, I actually now want to see this When Dutch explorers found them they thought they looked like cat-sized rats, which is why the island they inhabit is named Rottnest (translating to 'rats nest').

what wonderful photos to choose from
The Quokkas are interesting little critters, I'd not heard of them before.
I like the Koalas a lot. Someday hopefully I'll get to visit Australia, it's a place I've always wanted to go.

Re: June 2016 Fur, Scales and Feathers Challenge

In spite of being somewhat under the weather due to a relapse of cellulitis in the arm that I underwent axillary dissection for cancer treatment with, I managed to complete a couple of preliminary sketches to enter into your monthly challenge. I hope to complete them as paintings before the 20th!

Time will tell. Doctors orders are bed rest and round the clock antibiotics and more bed rest with the offending (my drawing painting arm Elevated..) Time will tell, but I snuck out of the regimen for a few hours today to avoid stir craziness and bed sores! So I may yet be able to join this wonderful group or artists in yet another challenge. I hope this post finds all of you well! Never give up that which you love best! As always, Deb Hill

Deborah -So sorry to hear you're not well! Don't push it if you are finding your arm too sore to draw/paint with. The main thing is, you recover well.
Sending big hugs to you, and hope you are feeling better soon!
