~FEBRUARY 2016 A&W Challenge ~

I'm posting images early for you as February is a short month despite leap year giving it 29 days

All artists and mediums are welcome, any size, any medium but you must
use one of the photos refs provided. All photos, for this Challenge, are from the RIL

You can crop, or use any part of the photo in any way you want to
but do remember to tell us the size and medium used.

If you require more information on the Challenge the "Guidelines" are
posted as a sticky at the top of the Forum page.

Please remember NOT to post your paintings until "reveal day" which is
February 20th.

It makes it more interesting and much more fun, if we all stick to the same
"reveal day". We then have the anticipation of seeing everyone's work at
about the same time.

My photos are all in my section of the RIL that you can see HERE

Buffalo skull decorated for holidays (my brother raised this one)

Jezebel in studio window (she's 15 going on 16)

Pinto horse sculptures at Ruidoso Downs, NM, by artist Dave McGary that are greater than lifesize

Our rescue cat Chester the molester, meanest cat in the world

Owner of Condotel/Ruidoso dog

Friend's boxer Thor

Yellow fish

Florida shorebirds

Our old bank building pigeons roosting

Deer resting early morning in Lincoln County NM

Moose (courtesy MorgueFile)

Sandhill cranes (I was able to photo these today, Sunday, so lucky!)

Enjoy the selection of fur, feathers, and fins If you'd like to participate in a challenge, here it is: Reverse the image!

I just added another image of sandhill cranes, very common to our dry area, that I took today.

Re: ~FEBRUARY 2016 A&W Challenge ~

I love the cranes, I have never seen one despite the fact they turn up somewhere here every year.

I have printed out my reference photo. My printer has decided to challenge me even further by insisting that my animal is blue... it could be an interesting painting

Probably I'll try the cranes. They are an amazing sight when such large flocks fly overhead.

Talking Re: ~FEBRUARY 2016 A&W Challenge ~

Thank you for hosting, Kay! Sandhill cranes are one of my favorite birds here in the north as well. They nest in central and northern Wisconsin and Minnesota and North Dakota in our area during the summer. When they migrate north in the spring they make quite a racket. They sound like a flock of Pterosaurs must have sounded when they took wing as well. They are amazing birds! One of our State Senators who is the husband of the Lt. Governor sponsored a bill to open a crane hunt up here which was roundly defeated. He proclaimed them the Veal of the skies and said that they do huge amounts of crop damage.. How he could say this is beyond me.. He doesn't farm and lives in the suburbs of Milwaukee. There are only around 800 cranes statewide during the breeding season and worse still, this state is home of the international crane foundation which has singlehandedly brought the Whooping cane back to its eastern fly zone and historical wintering grounds in the Florida Everglades.. Whooper chicks and immatures closely resemble immature sandhill cranes and we banded together to defeat That bill. Why is it that some Teaparty gun nuts feel the need to open season on anything of beauty, proclaiming them tasty. What next? A trumpeter swan hunt? An eagle hunt? Some people have no respect for the other living creatures on this planet... I have firearms, but I would never even consider hunting a sandhill crane.. A pox on our senator for wanting to do so! I think I'll give the cranes a shot.. Oh no, did I just say that? I Was speaking figuratively, not literally...

Terrific references Kay - nice and challenging too. Wish I could join in but am rushing around in South Africa and have so little time. I have saved that Moose - just love that whacky face and hope to paint him/her when I get back in April.
Thanks so much for hosting.
