My redeemer liveth

MY IMAGE(S):

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: My redeemer liveth
Year Created:
Medium: Oil
Surface: Canvas
Dimension: 36x24
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
This painting started off in the WIP forum. I'd love some serious feedback.

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
Does the balance of shadow and light work? Is the portraiture aesthetically correct? I am largely self taught.

Re: My redeemer liveth

I think this is very well done. You have reduced the subject to very simple shapes and handled the lights and shadows very well.
There are a couple of areas that don't completely work for me - the green splodge that may be part of his turban but mat be part of the tambourine is a little confusing. Also, the shadowed sleeve on his raised arm is very black - I would like to see a little reflected colour in there.
Very nice image though.

Mike

Re: My redeemer liveth

Thanks a million Mike. I completely understand the issue with the green spot as it isn't clear in the reference too. Guess I'll have to blot it out somehow.
I've searched and searched for the reflected light in the sleeve shadow but can't find any. As artistic licence permits, what colours would be in it?

Re: My redeemer liveth

Why not put some of those greens and reds in there? If you're working from a photograph, it would have reduced everything to black, but in life it would have picked up some of the surrounding colours.

Regards

Mike

Thanks Mike. I will surely revisit with some colour.
