Arrow May Plant Parade, 2015 or a 'Symphony of Colors'!!

Welcome to the Plant Parade for May, 2015, or a 'Symphony of Colors'!!

With Spring showing off the different flowers, a remarkable sight begins grabbing our attention!! We notice that the flowers are not the only attraction, but small insects that have brilliant and colorful wings start 'strutting' their stuff!! They put on a grand show of flitting and swirling around the flowers and amaze us with their beauty!! How can there be so many unique shapes of the Butterflies? But, watch, when they land on a flower, we have stereo colors. . .both are competing for our attention! But, wait, competing or becoming one? A flower alone is sometimes breathtaking, but with a Butterfly so brilliant with its own remarkable markings, wow, what a kaleidoscope of colors!!

This month we are going to paint brilliant flowers with equally brilliant Butterflies attached to them. We will call it a "Symphony of Colors"!!

Some Butterflies have a secret that is well kept. . .one side may be a brown, dull color, but on the other side, it may be a brilliant blue!! So, look at the Butterflies carefully, as you do a flower, and enjoy the surprises that could show forth!!

Science Lesson:

The Butterfly has antennae that are straight with a little bulb on the ends:

oty (Painted Lady Butterfly)

A Moth has feathered antennae:

mama mouse (Luna Moth)

We are looking only for Butterflies!!

Instructions:

*Reveal Date: Not before May 25th
*Use any medium to get these beauties ready for the reveal date
*Explore the shapes and patterns of the different kinds of Butterflies
*Design the painting by making it personally yours. . .
*Use the refs: that are posted here, in the RIL, or use your very own
*Post any refs of Butterflies that we might want to use, if you have any. . .just make sure they are copyright free. . .
*Share your discoveries and setbacks, but do not show your work until the 25th
*Check out the Greenie's Room for chatting, too!! All are invited there each month!!

Many thanks to all the ones whose pictures are being shown here!!

All lovelies! I do think flowers or plants should be with the insects when we depict them.

Thanks, gals!! Yes, flowers and Butterflies just go together this time of the year.

I did not show larger images, although some are as large as it gets, but will do that, if you PM me.

The RIL had so many that it was hard to decide which ones to show!! You do not have to use the same flowers that are in the picture, but make it your own with another beautiful flower/s!!

Our Memorial Day falls on the 25th, but remember, we accept paintings after that date, too!! So, no worries!!

Hugs, Katherine

Hmmm...interesting! I've never painting a butterfly before (or for that matter, a bee). This will be interesting.

Of course, I'm having to work 2 days a week for the next few months... ...

Re: May Plant Parade, 2015 or a 'Symphony of Colors'!!

Sounds lovely. I've never created a butterfly before. It should be interesting this month.

Monarch has always been my favorite, perhaps because of the milkweed...I always leave some in among my flowers in the hope that I can see a chrysalis hanging down from it as I did when I was a child. So far, I have not found one. But I keep hoping.

So many lovely butterflies to choose though...which will I do???

First, I am going to get over this cold, then I shall get to work. I shall plan to try to dream about it and perhaps I will settle on one then.

Looking forward to all your beautiful work, Ladies and Gentlemen. Blessings!

Re: May Plant Parade, 2015 or a 'Symphony of Colors'!!

Lea, so glad you are going to be with us!! You will love the Butterflies because they are so graceful!!

LynneDe, as a Science teacher, my students and I raised the Painted Lady Butterflies each year and released them to continue their cycle. It was tough sometimes to see them each day because Nature did not get rid the injured ones without us knowing, so we got to see all of them-warts and all. We got rather attached to them and it was fun, but a bit hard, to let them just fly away! The students LOVED to hold them on their fingers. . .gave me some second thoughts at the time, but it was a joyous day and one they remembered. I was in Junior High, so the older students would comment on 'their' experiment the year before and watched them grow, too. The Painted Lady Butterfly is a medium sized one, not like the Monarch which is one of the larger ones. Can't wait to see what you paint this month for us!!

Lil, hopefully you will be able to do one of your fantastic paintings, too!! Keep saying, "This is going to be sooooooo much fun!!!"

Spread the work. . .we are going to see some spectacular Butterflies with their amazing Flowers!!

Hugs, Katherine

Re: May Plant Parade, 2015 or a 'Symphony of Colors'!!

Katherine - We don't have many colorful butterflies in New Zealand - not like Australia which have lots of colorful varieties, especially in Queensland - but one we do have is the Monarch butterfly.

When we were in the North Island, on holiday, my grandchildren there, had grown the "Butterfly" plant,in their garden as a school project. The Monarch butterflies on it, were beginning to hatch out of their chrysalis.

We watched over a few days, as they emerged! Fascinating!! Every time we went out to the garden to check, more were hatching. Wonderful to see them opening their wings and watch, as their wings began drying in the sun until they began to flutter off! We were there for a week, and every day we'd watch them...a great experience, and something to remember.

Re: May Plant Parade, 2015 or a 'Symphony of Colors'!!

Katherine, what a lovely but bitter-sweet class that must have been. I would not have wanted to see the damaged ones die, but to know that I helped a butterfly to grow and take off into the wild...sad yes, but how marvelous. Who knows how many have descended from them that would not be with us now? How lovely to have a birth experiment rather than one that took the life...( I know they are important to study for some, but I still prefer not to do that kind of work).

I am still not sure what butterfly to try...they are beautiful, each one...the selection is daunting at the moment. I may have to decide on a flower first, then determine what butterflies frequent them. I think that is what I will have to do.

Right now, this nose of mine needs too many tissues to catch up with it to work with clay...so I have a bit of time to consider still.

I have no idea where it is at, but many years ago, around 1993, we were camping. There was a small stream nearby, it was extremely hot so I went wading in it. When I came out of the water, droplets of water clung to my legs and feet. A butterfly landed on my leg and drank the drops as they evaporated. Then if flew off. I went into the stream again, got wet again and came out, but this time I grabbed my camera. Somewhere in my tub of pictures, I believe I may still have one or two of them with the butterfly on my leg or foot, drinking. It was a point and shoot, the quality isn't anything like digital today...if I find it (them) during the challenge, I will scan and post it.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. It makes it so much more personal when I get to learn what people are about. Blessings!
