Oil Pastel Challenge - May 2015

Oil Pastel Challenge May 2015

Hi everyone. I'll be hosting this months challenge.
This month's Oil Pastel 'Challenge' is for ALL abilities and you can experiment with new techniques if you like; just sketch or leap out of your comfort zone and try an unfamiliar subject. It's entirely up to you how you proceed, as long as 75% of your painting is completed with oil pastels.

You're free to post as you go, even if a 'WIP' to show us your process, which we love to see, or if you get stuck and need help and advice. We are all friendly and happy to help.

When you post your finished piece it's really useful if you state:
- the type of support you used including any surface prep,
-the finished size of your painting or sketch,
-the brand of Oil Pastels used
-whether you used anything under the OP as an under-painting or wash.

Other mediums may be used to compliment, but the work must be primarily Oil Pastels.

It's not mandatory, we are just a nosy bunch.

So here we go.......

Photos are courtesy of my daughter (Lapine on wetcanvas). I'll post more soon. I'll be away for a few days, which is why I am posting early.

Re: Oil Pastel Challenge - May 2015

I tried one of the dancers.
16*24cm sennelier oil pastel pad with 24 assorted colors sennelier oil pastel.
I changed a little the colors because it would have been too difficult with my limited colors.
And I am aware the head has wrong proportion, wrong direction...
I will try to do better when I will paint another dancer.

Faces aren't exactly my strong point and dolls even less I guess. I didn't quite catch the porcelain look either A4 with Pentel ops

Re: Oil Pastel Challenge - May 2015

Hi Poulpi. I like your dancer. I think her head is fine, and the legs and arms are well done. Maybe a tweak to the neckline or torso might do the trick? Not sure - this isn't an area I am well versed in. By the way, I love the wild hair too.

Tuscanny - I like the way the doll came out - especially the eyes and hair. Very nice.

i like the addition of the background, Poulpi. Great going on the figures. I'd add some darker shadows to indicate folds and shadows on the second painting. You could add some dark purple in tiny amounts until you get the desired shade. I like the red clothing.

Hi Poulpi. The arms and neck look very realistic on this dancer; and I like the position you put the head in. The background and clothes colors complement each other nicely - hair looks good too!
