February Plant Parade Challenge

Since it's winter up here, and flowers are hard to come by, I decided to make this month's challenge Tropical Flowers!

In addition to the few reference photos I took myself when we visited Louisiana, I asked permission to post some of the photos my brother's partner took in Hawaii, with the assurance that we are using them as references, not to reproduce the photos!

So use these references, or your own, but paint tropical flowers this month! Any medium, any size, any colors, and any tropical flowers! You can discuss, kibitz, moan and groan, or crow, just don't post the finished work until February 25!

These are my references (you can also find them in the RIL):

New Guinea Impatiens

Bird of Paradise, New Orleans

Orchids, New Orleans

These pictures are the ones from my brother's partner, taken in Hawaii. To assure him that they wouldn't be used for photos, I promised to resize them at a lower resolution. If you can't work from these, let me know and I will resize at a slightly higher resolution for you!

(I have no idea what flower this is, but thought it was really cool!)

(Hibiscus, in its natural element)

(again, don't know what flower this is)

(This and the next are birds of paradise)

(Another unknown to me)

I've got some more, but I'll have to put them in a new post...

As you can see, I stopped bothering to mention that I don't know what the flowers are...but since they're beautiful, and from Hawaii, I figure they fit the theme.

Have fun and happy painting!

Re: February Plant Parade Challenge

Thanks Lea - some are proteas I think (S. African) but don't quote me!
There are two or three that Meggs can probably name as I think we've seen the plants (not these pics!) in another PP .......... plenty of choice for us - so off to warmer climes

Lea, thank you for hosting, so beautiful, will have a hard time deciding. I saw you have ginger and heliconias from Hawaii, I live in Florida and have never tried ginger but it is on my wish list.

Re: February Plant Parade Challenge

They are all beautiful! Does anyone know what flower species that last photo is....the purple flower with the white stamens...is it a species of Bougainvillea?
And also that feathery -many petaled, red flower under the ginger flower? It could be a bottle brush but looks very similar to our New Zealand Pohutakawa tree?

Viv, the last photo is a species of Bougainvillea. What is the next to last? I thought it was a Ginger plant, but not thinking it is.

Thanks, Lea, for hosting!!

Wow what a lovely array of beauties.... So love those orchids.

Mum some resemble our Protea her in Aus, may be in the same family.
Viv, Im sure thats what we call the NZ Christmas bush.

Its going to be hard to choose.

Re: February Plant Parade Challenge

Beautiful images, Lea, what a great idea. Tropical sounds good to me this time of year! Thanks for hosting this month.

That purplish flower, right above the hibiscus photo, is a Snail or Corkscrew Vine. I tried to grow it one year. Apparently it doesn't like growing here, even as an annual.
