** Jan 16th WDE - Images here **

Welcome to the January 16th, 2015 Weekend Drawing Event! We will be visiting some museums, including the Smithsonian Natural History Museum and the Smithsonian Museum of Fine Art in DC.

I will be posting 16 images and a challenge.

Please wait until all are uploaded before commenting - thank you.

You have 30 minutes to make your choice and choose your materials - you may use any medium.

For the next two hours, just go for it……then STOP!, scan or photograph your work and post it in your own new thread with your title, beginning with WDE, plus date, plus title.

When you introduce your work, please add a description of size, medium, support (paper, canvas etc) and time taken.
If your work is digital, we'd appreciate a description of whether it's freehand drawing/painting, manipulated image or done using the filters available in some programs - you could also say which program you've used.
All are acceptable but we'd like to know the "hows, whys and wherefores"!!

Use WIP for any work in progress at the 2 hour mark, and MI for multiple images if other works are to be added before the following Monday.

NB. To avoid forum flooding, please put all of your work during the weekend, for the current WDE, into a single thread: multiple threads will be merged!
From the following TUESDAY, you may open a new thread for later work.

You have the whole week to participate - until the next WDE starts (usually Friday).

After posting your contribution, please view others’ entries and comment and encourage when you can. Unless requested, please refrain from critiquing.

Giant elephant in the foyer of the Museum of Natural History:

Some beautiful lacy coral preserved in the museum (nature is the best zentangler of all!):

Another lot of elephants (metal), looks like they are in a hurry to get somewhere:

Some statues and marble busts for the people who to paint people, all from the Museum of Fine Art:

An interesting old typewriter:

A beautiful mineral formation, I think minerals are nature's abstract art:

MORE TO COME...please wait to comment!

A bird display in the Museum of Natural History:

An interesting looking building that was near the museum:

I liked how these people were stepping in sync:

This is a winterberry plant also near the museum:

An interesting plant growing near the museum. I'm sure it had a label but as I have no pic of that, I will call it a giant cabbage:

Potted colors from Newport RI:

I liked this display of hats in Newport:

And finally we end with a beautiful sunset over the water also in Newport:

THE CHALLENGE: Bring some of the museum items to life, for example the elephants could be stampeding in the Serengeti or the abstractish rock could be a waterfall or a stream

Oh and here is the invite pic for anyone who wants it:

Larger images are in the RIL but they are all pending approval:

http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/show...0&ppuser=20356

They should be available by tomorrow sometime, I think.

Hope everyone finds something they like, enjoy!

Some lovely refs there. As I scrolled down I saw the elephants and thought - oh I need to bring those to life (I've done so before with some statues of eles) and set them free. After viewing all the refs, you set it as a challenge!

DC looks nice. So open and light. I've never fancied New York, too crowded and dour with skyscrapers. I like the openness of DC. I see it on TV when I watch Bones!

Some excellent crystal specimens too.

I'm sure I'll get something done this weekend although I feel really awful today.

Nice array of pictures to choose from. I believe the plants in Front of the museum are kale. At least they look like kale I have grown.

Oh wow! Oh this is inspiring, thank you for the museum tours! So tempted to bring Winged Mercury to life running for his life from the elephant. Or just do good paleo art of one of the prehistoric elephants, you caught some of the more interesting extinct ones! Shovel tusker right toward the front. Or bring in a saber tooth to motivate the elephant. Loads of possibilities. I like the challenge, very tempting to try it with one of the elephants.
