Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

Thanks Lawrence!

#02 - WDE challenge, Dave

9x12inch, WC CP green & red, ball point pen, experiment. 70gsm paper

Made a number of mistakes with the face proportion and attempt to correct it with a thick layer of pen. Green and red tends to mud together. Too heavy with the WC CP.

Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

Thank you Jay!

In this practise, I am trying out this concept in graphite (mentioned many times in this forum) to create more value ranges by optimising fewer pencils and avoid crushing the paper tooth. This forum is a gem mine!

#03 - WDE challenge: parrot (cropped)
Images adjusted to improve contrast.

9x6 inch, 2H and prismacolor ebony.

#05 - WDE challenge. The reference image is a bird bath. I tried to create something using the bird as focal and the repeating of the plant elements in the image.

9x12, ballpoint pen

I enjoy watching your sketchbook thread, Coaltip. These all have something going for them, though I am especially fond of the cats and of the parrot. Your skills continue to grow!

Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

Thanks Jenna for your encouragement! your recent is stunning and an inspiration. The conte pencils are too soft and keep on breaking for my liking. Its quite coarse and I will need to do a larger scale drawing .... Likely to leave this medium for the time being till I can develop a softer touch.

#07 - WDE challenge: Another Cat

9x12, 90gsm, sanguine, sanguine medicis, charcoal

Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

I laughed when I saw the dog--he made me think of the Satanic dog, Mr. Pickles. Good job. I'm currently struggling writing a treatment for a story called "Dest'ry" which is a supernatural western so I was interested in your cowboy--i like the way you handled the hat---I always mess those up.

The bird bath is brilliant-you should work on developing that as a design motif--it would look great on a cup or shirt or whatever--see what you can do with it.

one the things I love about pen and pencil and this holds true for me in the marble bust is that i can see real elements of you as an artist--you were sitting at the paper feeling your way through this one, exploring the shapes looking for an answer as you went along--I like seeing this sort of thing--it's very exciting. This is nice work.

Again---just for kicks--back to the dog and just for clarification--Mr Pickles Rocks!

The bird bath is so delightfully and delicately handled, it's hard to believe you're finding you have too heavy a hand for the Contes. You have your own style and it is very pleasing to the eye.

Re: Coaltip's SketchBook 2015

I don't see the heavy hand at all and agree with Tyree and ketze (ketze my persistent spellchecker thinks your name is "kettle"). Are you sitting when you draw? If so, for giggles, grab your conte and an easel and just do a simple sketch standing up and make sure you draw (from your elbow, like I have to tell you this) as lightly as possible. You also might want to consider using a ponce stick--conte doesn't work for me because I have just never been able to make it work for me so when i see someone about to walk away from it even for a while it kind of makes me sad--you are better at it then you realize. Keep at it. You have fans, my friend.
