Notan Experiment

A notan is a black and white Pos./Neg. study for finding essential shapes in a composition.
The Japanese use the term ‘Notan’ to describe an important element of design. This concept involves the play of light versus dark. Notan means dark versus light harmony. The Japanese concept of two value Notan uses the simple concept of contrasting light and dark shapes. In other words, black versus white. Notan is also used to establish balance in a painting’s composition. There are many artistic concepts that we can use to build a good composition in art. However this one easily develops a path of light. We must always remember that creating good composition in art is about using several different artistic concepts. Some concepts help with color balance and harmony, and some with movement and line.

I thought I would actually paint INTO the notan.

Black, white and gray gesso on canvas: Then color progression. DEREK

Finish

AFTERTHOUGHTS: like pastel on black paper, the color pops. I like the way the composition can be read easily. I like the black edge that peeps thru on occasion.

Re: Notan Experiment

Well done.

I studied Notan in art school and further about 5 years ago. It really simplifies values, making them much easier to understand.

Re: Notan Experiment

Derek,
This something I can use that doesn't threaten my odd style.
Thanks. Ron Ayres

Re: Notan Experiment

Beautiful result Derek. Loving that sky and the pops of fall color. What did you use for your color, acrylic or oil?

Re: Notan Experiment

I paint now in almost such manner. Only I use raw umbra instead of black color.
Well experimented on this one, Derek.

Re: Notan Experiment

A great result Derek - Well painted ! & an interesting concept also - Thanks for sharing - My focus is usually the proportion of light versus dark & therefore aim for the 1/3 to 2/3 ratio.

Michael.

Re: Notan Experiment

Very cool experiment, Derek, and it turned into a beautiful painting! It would be interesting to try another version with a different color underneath. Thanks for sharing this!
