Loony Loons!

Good Morning Painter People... I submitted this pair of Loons to a juried exhibition. They were rejected, but I was ok with that because they're gracing a wall in my family room.

Each is gallery wrapped 16x20" on Fabriano Artistico 140# paper. A very limited palette of burnt sienna and ultramarine blue dominates both pieces with just a touch of red for the eyes and a little green on the heads. The excessive white space didn't photograph well and the black elements look a little flat. Both paintings are dropped into black floater frames for visual impact. It didn't work for the judges! Very special thanks to Alan Wilson of Natures Pics Online for these references. I've painted them in the past, but included a more detailed background.

Your comments and critiques are most welcome!

As a side note, I'd painted this guy in a very short session to demonstrate washy backgrounds, masking fluid and pen work... It was accepted and it sold! Thanks to WthrLady for the reference which I very loosely adapted.

They're all lovely, I'm a birder and really appreciate the movement you've captured in the loons. Your dragonfly is sooo marvelous, have you done a demo here on WC on wash backgrounds? Would love to see it if you have...

heimlicher Favorit!

Too bad Charlene, that these fantastic works were rejected.
It is not to understand why.
Maybe it will be you in another exhibition so to score points - I wish you!
All three work perfectly developed and implemented - Motive one is my
secret favorite!

Nice matching pair Char. I'm not surprised the dragonfly sold, it is exquisite.

Charlene - you are a very talented lady!. When a painting is rejected by a jury, that is often to be taken as a compliment ....you should see some of the horrors that are accepted!

The loons are beautifully drawn and painted and the dragon fly is superb.

Re: Loony Loons!

The Loons are perfect...their looniness and posturing is just what one sees. The dragonfly is exactly what watercolor should be...of course that one sold.

LOVE the loons Char, they are such distinctive birds. Lovely job.

The dragonfly is wonderful too and congratulations on being accepted but more so that it sold!

Re: Loony Loons!

I think your loons are gorgeous, Char. The juror seems to have been the loony one.

Congrats on the sale of the dragonfly painting.
