June 2014 Watercolor Challenge - Clumber Church

Congratulations on all who did the Windermere Boathouse challenge. If you are still working on it post it in that thread.

This month's challenge is a beautiful church in Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire, once part of Sherwood Forest. Clumber park was a regular place to visit when we lived in south Yorkshire. The photo was take on a weekend away at nearby Thoresby Hall Hotel a wonderful base for touring local attractions.

Hope you like it, there's a large copy in the RIL Here.

You can try it in any style, from simple silhouettes to a detailed architectural painting and everything in between.

Remember there is no time limit for these challenges, just post in this thread if it takes your fancy.

Doug

That is cool, got a similar challenge with the trees ( so I can resume tackling trees, was thinking I would have to redo the other picture )

LOL Brian, I think the trees will be easier here, better massing.

Good for you Alan, though I think your colours look a little muddy. What size is it and what paper are you using?

Doug.

Thanks Alan.....yours look good...maybe a little yellow green at the horizon & a few darker shadow areas in the trees would really pop it.

Re: June 2014 Watercolor Challenge - Clumber Church

I will try that correction Larry, thanks. Doug, the paper is 8 x10 Strathmore cold-pressed, my usual. You are right about the colors looking a little muddy, part of that seems to happen a lot with my work where it looks blotchy up close (such as in any photo I take of them) but fine from two feet or more away. I guess I have to think about that more.

6x9 canson block, trying to use smaller sheets and larger brushes, and first time using this paper. Kind of overworked on this one, scrubbed out the sky, probably will try it again. This paper seems to be able to take some abuse.
