Talking Coloured Pencils On Black Paper

I, too, work with colored pencil on black card stock. I find laying down a ground of white or ivory lets me layer the next colors and helps them "POP"! Also, scanning colored pencil IS difficult, some will come through and others come through in black and white???? Haven't figured that one out yet. Am going to try matte fixative to see if I can get rid of the wax shine-have you tried it? Thank you so much for sharing your techniques, really love your work.

Thank you miek37: WELCOME to WetCanvas

I didn't know my lesson had finally made it here. I've been trying to get it right since the beginning of May. Thanks to Scott, I see it's here.

I don't use the fixitive on the watercoloured or the normal coloured pencils. If they are matted and framed behind glass straight away. They should be okay.

I hope you will post your works for us to see

PS. I did use the white first on one of my drawings
Here is the end result:

there is also a Coloured pencil Project you are welcome to submit to
Project

Hi! O!!!! I will try to get some work on, in fact am just working on a Mom and Baby Swan and a Poppa Swan. I produce "little paintings" (I call them paintings even tho' they are done in colored pencil") and a gallery here in town buys them for resale. We are a little town on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in North Carolina. So, many boats call in here and many of my paintings are on those boats and have travelled to far places! The sizes range from 2"x3" image size to 3"x5". I frame them in gold frames and provide little display easels so they can sit on chests, desks and by computers!! I am not getting rich doing this but it is fun and keeps me off the streets!! Gotta run, I go to my studio at 9:30AM and work until noon. Am enjoying this web site. Helen (am cat lover too

Teanne,
you should try spraying one or two coats of fixative on your cp pieces...it'll get rid of any wax bloom, and make the colors POP. It really does make a big difference...

Fixative for CP work

I haven't been doing it but on these 8 orders I have I WILL! Bet Borgeson in her books and on her web site, says to use it, too, for protection against any rubbing that might take place against the glass over time. So guess it's better to be safe than sorry, should have done it on my first 72 pieces OOOOPS!

72? Wow... If they are framed correctly they shouldn't come in contact with the glass at all. One would have thought!

Unhappy

OOOOOOOPS! Again! I matted a few of them, but otherwise they are not matted, just ruled off to let part of the card stock serve as "matt". Explains why CP was near glass. So far no complaints from customers or gallery, but who knows on down the line. Talk about live and learn! Helen

Question Does anybody else have any good tips?

For using coloured pencils on black paper. I want to learn more because I do enjoy the cp's very much. With a limited space to work in they are an ideal meduim.

As you will soon tell I have never worked with colour pencils before (besides the kids colouring in books!)... I can't envisage how a coloured pencil would show with such vibrancy on black paper. How does that work?! Surely the black would suck all the colour away, or are there special types of pencil for doing this?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
