Shall I keep going or throw it away?

Hi all,

If you wouldn't mind, I'm not sure whether to keep going with this as I think I've messed up the composition in that the duck is too far down on the page. I based this on my reference photo (as you can see I'm not a great photographer!).

Thanks in advance for your feedback,

Geri

Noone answered you? I think it looks fine. You can always use artistic license on the top and add something up there that would mesh with the rest. Too nice of a drawing to waste...

I agree. You could make the water very interesting and balance things. It's a nice work so far.

The duck is looking up as the photographer was standing above the duck when he/she shot the photo. Having it that low on the paper is fitting with the angle of the shot.

I think the composition will work out ok as it is as long as you create some attractive water feature above the duck.

I think the compostion works fine. He's just in the right place with enough space at the top. Looking forward to seeing your painting.

Re: Shall I keep going or throw it away?

Keep the reflection toned down, and keep the contrast and detail strong on the duck's head. The viewer's attention will then be on the duck's head, which is in the top half of the image. As others have said, you could add interest to the water above the duck, or you could simply crop the image to make a more pleasing composition. Lots of possibilities. Looking forward to seeing it as it progresses.

Thank you so much Jackie! Those are very valid points indeed! I don't feel like starting again so I'll try what you and others have suggested. Cheers, Geri

Geri, the drawing is so good, it would be a real shame to erase it. Reeds would look great in the background.

Never throw out any work. It looks fine, you can work on the back ground, the duck is not too low. Great work!
