Re: In the Fire

Primarily red, white and yellow ochre. The white emerges as if it were representing trees--only because it involves scratchy verticals. The white elements appear to be seen "through" the softer red/dark zone.

I don't really look for images in nonrepresentational work as it seems like the opposite of the point. But it is actually quite difficult to make an image that doesn't hint at something. Put in a horizontal line and it might be a horizon, a diagonal hints at movement through space, a vertical could be a human figure or a tree figure depending on the space. This suggests larger space and the repeats within a horizontal suggest landscape. The feel of enclosure due to the saturated surrounding color helps suggest forest.

Red is the color of blood, thus, the color of life, the color of death, the color of passion, some say the color of evil. White is the color is paper, the printed word, knowledge, the mind. Some say it is the color of good. Some say you can get in trouble trying to apply critical analysis to someone else's painting.

Re: In the Fire

fgloftin, you have a great sense of humor!
abstract art is always a personal view, and only that.
can never take anyone's view too personal as your own is what you do it for.
so after reading what you say...It looks like I combined good and evil OR it could be passion and knowledge
thank you! I don't take any criticism personally, I take it as seeing two sides

Re: In the Fire

If I copy this to PS in order to rotate it I will have 4 different interpretations of non-representational art. Or I could give you 4 different critiques of your mark-making and color theory gobbleygookery.

or I can just tell you that it seems happy and made me smile.

if I was a rich man yayaydaya I would buy it and add to my collection of things that have pleased me.

and really, isn't that all that is important?

Re: In the Fire

I was not making fun of you,
just me and others who sometimes forget that Art (Painting) is sometimes nothing more than mark-making on a substrate, and sometimes nothing more.

just ask any cat with a beret and a brush.

Re: In the Fire

I don't see it as passion/knowledge or good/evil. But there is a nice contrast and tension. Just not between "meanings" at least not for me. If red meant passion then I could just put red on a canvas without care and it would be passion and there'd be no art to it at all. It would just be a puzzle piece representing a word representing an idea instead of elemental color.

I don't understand that.

The "meaning" of deep red is infinite, and of scratches of white also infinite, and together the meaning could be anything, infinity multiplied... A field of red surrounding white marks could be handled an infinity of ways.

Yours is good.
