Two Trees

Been a while since I got dusty so I threw a little box of Girault pastels in my backpack and hiked out to do this little sketch. Beautiful day here - 78 degrees with a light wind. I almost took a nap under the trees instead of painting them....

9 x 12 pastel on sanded paper

Re: Two Trees

Great painting. Would I be correct in guessing that it was done without blending? I can't help blending and I would like to limit the use of it and your painting is a good study for me. Do you take a lot of pastels with you or limit your selection? Thanks Pam

Nice one Randy, it looks just like you described the day, comfortable, sunny, and I can just picture the breeze.....

Thanx Pam. Yes, I was using an assortment of about 40 half sticks. Sounds like a lot but my Heilman backpacker box, which I usually use outside, must have over 150 so... I guess it's all relative.

I'm trying an experiment, painting without blending just because I recently saw some work by Australian painter Maxwell Wilks. He has a VERY unusual process in which he doesn't really blend. The final results are very cool. Check him out....

Re: Two Trees

Sounds and looks like a wonderful relaxed day. That patch of light grass under the trees looks very inviting! Nice work.

Re: Two Trees

Nice work Randy, don't think I could do a painting without my finger diving in to blend everything

Re: Two Trees

Nice painting Randy. Especially like the composition and use of negative space in the tree branches. Gives a lot of movement to an otherwise static subject.

Giraults are terrific for travel aren't they? You can easily fit 150 in a small box and they're not quite as dusty if you're far from a faucet.

I really like this one, Randy! The shadows on the tree trunk are spectacular. We missed you Friday night!
