My travel sketchbook

This year we spent our easter vacation on the German northsea island "Sylt". I really love this island with lots of high dunes and houses with thatched roofs.
We had 6 sunny days with little clouds, but it was very windy and cold.
I started a new sketchbook, a ringbound Stillman and Birn Delta, but very often I could only make quick sketches, because of the freezing, cold wind. But I made lots of sketches

This is "Morsum-Kliff" a cliff with beautiful colored layers of earth

Re: My travel sketchbook

Those sketches are nice. I love the colours and sense of space in the watercolour ones.

And I hear you about trying to work outside when it's cold. I'm in Sutherland, Scotland, and the weather here is freezing right now. Not good for the fingers, thats for sure!

Re: My travel sketchbook

Very nice watercolor sketches, you really captured the atmosphere of the oceans coastline, and like you say I bet the wind was still cold in the north sea in march. A real interesting sounding location thanks for sharing.

Re: My travel sketchbook

Thank you!

This is "Kampen Lighthouse". Around the lighthouse you can make long walks through the heathland with spectacular views to the sea. There are a lot of beautiful houses with thatched roofs and lovely cultured gardens. The evergreen trees around the houses contrasting with the brown heath. It must be wonderful when the heather blooms.

Re: My travel sketchbook

Wonderful sketches from your holiday. I especially like the one of the lighthouse...I have a thing for them. I find that when I sketch on vacation the sketches have more meaning than any photos I take. For some reason it is easier to recall that moment when you have drawn it. I think you process it differently.

Re: My travel sketchbook

Thanks Debby and Joan!

I love these white garden gates and the stone walls! I had to sketch them! The view to the sea was stunning...I wish it was my property

Re: My travel sketchbook

I can see why you had to sketch that. Beautiful.

Re: My travel sketchbook

Thank you so much for your comments!

This is at the west beach. The strong wind was blowing from east and there was no surf. The sea was flat and tame and the beach was very wide.
It was so cold, that I could only do a very quick sketch. Better than nothing

Re: My travel sketchbook

It's hard to sketch when your fingers are cold. Lovely beach.
