I will try to get a photo of Thursday's exercise posted, but I was dead yesterday.
Today we reaped the benefits of a wonderful day of staring at scenes lit with first red, then green light.
Her little exercise (aside from giving me a migraine) made the most amazing dent in my perception of color in the shadow.
Most of these are a bit fuzzy as I did them digi and drew more than snapped.
The model:

First sketch after underpainting with key values put in:

The lightest light and darkest dark were applied and it influenced the whole picture after that so we were aware of what the two directions we had to go were.

Large tonal and color areas:

I put in my lightest areas too light for what I was doing, next time I stay deeper values because in the final picture there is more punch against the light.

Gosh...I love the painting than the actual way the model is posed. More feelings and the way she is expressed!
Great job! hope this makes any migrane disappear!

dj,

Thanks for posting all these wonderful studies throughout your workshop. You have learned so much...but not nearly as much as you will in the coming months ahead as you apply these techniques.

But the best part is that you are learning to "see" more. What a treasure. Along with this is your own "hand" and application of pastel. I cannot wait to see what you will be doing a year from now, combining what you know + what you have just learned + rest + practice.

I really agree. It is a new tool and I will have to adapt it all to my work. I did one tonight that I posted in the Critique forum. It is funny, her composition techique is what I think effected me the most. I had a very hard time getting a good composition on the newest piece, but I DID a composition. Usually I rely on instinct. Her super simple 3 value space planning makes a huge impact on how I am looking at the white space.
I really think the actual style is more labored than my usual work, but when I drop the lessons and get working on the results, I KNOW there will be a noticable change.
Perhaps I am figuring out not how to START a piece, but how to tell when it is finished!

dj...I had to come see what you had here after your post in Critiques. I just a couple weeks ago got a book by watercolorist Tom Lynch, and he is a BIG proponent of the 3 (or 4) value concept. In fact, he explains that a painting either falls into the 3 value concept, or else, into a more checkerboard pattern of darks and lights. It has altered my way of looking, too. He also has VERY strong focal points and they are about 1/16 of the size of his painting. I have GOT to get into pastels...! What book would you recommend as a first buy, must have? This Tom Lynch book is tops with me. But, I wouldn't recommend IT to a watercolor beginner. ...with pastels...I am REALLY a newbie... what would be good?

Sally has demos in three or four pastel books, none of which I own but have checked out from the library.
She is on the cover of one I believe it is called "Making Paintings from Photographs"
I looked at her demos many times and didn't GET it until the workshop.
I will try to do a research for you.

dj! I just re -read here and realized I'd forgotten to say how beautifully this turned out! I made my husband come and look at all these steps. I think he is getting used to the idea...I need a workshop!!! lol
