Bouguereau's - "The Harvester"

Greetings,

About 2 years ago Nancy did a wonderful copy of The Haverster. Ever since then I wanted to try painting this too.

Finally treated myself out to a 30" x 40" canvas and have started painting.

Any comments or help are greatly appreciated as I am not sure what I am doing...

Thanks

Joy, that's what it's all about....learning, if we already knew what would the fun be anyway? That said, you have a gorgeous drawing started, looking forward to this..

Re: Bouguereau's - "The Harvester"

Joy, as you can see, I made a lot of mistakes on my copy of "The Harvester." I hope you can improve from what I did here. The first thing to note is that I positioned the head too low in the scene, and so ended up dividing the horizon line in half, which is a no-no compositionally. The second big boo-boo is I didn't get enough reddish blue into it and ended up with a greenish-blue aspect (like she could be harvesting in the American West!)

You have done a marvelous start, Joy, and I'm really going to enjoy watching this evolve in your capable hands! Some of you should join her in this, too. I had a couple of partners, and it's a lot more fun to tackle something this great in a group!

Re: Bouguereau's - "The Harvester"

Thank you Nancy.

I would love to have people join me in painting this...

Thanks for the information. I have broken out the books and am reading a little more about glazing. I also ran out of flake white and it should be arriving shortly.

Thanks again.

Happy painting.

Re: Bouguereau's - "The Harvester"

Here is an updated on the painting... My paints are running low and have been ordered and should be arriving shortly.

The paints for the grisaille are one part Mars black, one part raw umber and two parts Chromium Oxide Green then lighted with flake white.

I underestimated the staining power of my mix to the flake white.. and ended up with a mixing mess...

However I did come up with a solution that seems to be working for me. I mixed the black, raw umber and green together and put it into the empty tube of my flake white - just pulling out a small amount of paint at a time. It also keeps the paint from drying out before I can finish it.

Happy Painting
Joy

Re: Bouguereau's - "The Harvester"

Thank you Becca,

I also ordered some empty tubes. That should make life easier than trying to re-inflate the tubes. I had really flatted it trying to get out all the paint left in the tube..

Happy painting..
Joy

Curiosity got the best of me...

In the original painting - the girl has on a salmon coloured ribbon on her left side... Does any body know what this represents?

it is by the strap on her shirt on her right side under her neck. Not sure it is a handle or a ribbon.
