The Plant Parade - a forum project December 2012

DECEMBER 2012 PLANT PARADE

Let's explore the merriment and mysteries of the poinsettia plant.

December 12th is National Poinsettia Day. That's right, the US Congress actually gave the Poinsettia an official day of recognition. They are hard to resist at this time of year, especially with all the new colors, shades and swirls. I'm still partial to the red ones, for Christmas, but if I could grow them in my area I would definitely try growing the pastel varieties. I've searched back about 5 years in our forum here and did not find where we've honored this plant during December or holiday Christmas time.

Here are several colors to get you started and more in the RIL. Don't post before the 20th please. Any medium, any size, the choices are yours. Post within this thread and do give us your specifics such as size and medium used; refrain from critiquing unless the artist requests.

CHALLENGE
Incorporate something else into your composition besides just the poinsettia leaves. Maybe your pet dog or cat, a statue, a still life item, or holiday/Christmas ornament. Above all, have fun during this delightful month!

More varieties can be seen in the ref library HERE from mustcreate and others; my poinsettias RIL are uploaded but are not visible yet

Re: The Plant Parade - a forum project December 2012

Love these plants and the new varieties. Such a great opportunity to paint and a good excuse to buy one. Thank you KK. It makes me so cross when they cost such a lot for a tiny pot here and yet you see huge hedgerows of them in warmer climes.
I love the legend:
People in Mexico took bouquets of flowers before Christmas to the cathedral to decorate it for the festive season. One little girl had nothing to give but so wanted to take a contribution. She picked some wild green leaves and people laughed and looked disapprovingly as she carried them towards the church. As she walked down the aisle the bracts turned a flaming red. A Christmas miracle and everyone agreed they were the most beautiful plants of all.

Luscious! And you're right Kay, we haven't used poinsettias before - good call
I love the colours - and the plants, though they're not easy to keep here.

Already have some ideas

Could you edit to say 'Not before 20th' please, otherwise we may have some posting tomorrow! Thanks
