Re: Mm2347

Immediately and indubitably I can warn that you will not find the name of this Mystery Master. This triptych was realized by an anonymous Old Master painter (or attributed to the workshop of an anonymous Old Master painter) whose work is known but whose name is not.

Here is an alternative photograph of the triptych.

Quote:
The idea of a named and recognised painter originated among art historians early in the 20th century, who were attributing works they recognised to known painters. They later went back on some of these attributions, renaming as anonymous the painters they had formerly named. One example is the case of Pier Francesco Fiorentino, to whom Bernard Berenson attributed a number of works which were later re-attributed to Pseudo Pier Francesco Fiorentino, a Florence copyist. Some painters have even been described as anonymous (even many times like Barthélemy Eyck) before later being recognised. They thus held several names historically (those who are noted on the page devoted to them), although doubts continue surrounding some, such as Giovanni Gaddi (after 1333 - 1383) maybe the Master of the Misericordia dell’Accademia. Another work by the artist:

This Mystery Master is one of many anonymous artists identifiable by his painting style but not by his name. Interestingly enough, even though his name remains unknown, we know what he looked like, thanks to a remarkable painting by the artist representing himself and his wife.

The middle portion of the first triptych is incredibly reminiscent of

Master, of Hoogstraeten (active ca. 1490 - 1530)
Madonna and Child with Saints
Date: ca. 1525

It is interesting to note that while the figures are similarly juxtaposed, the background setting is entirely different. Also, the painting in the opening post has been dated circa 1500-1510.

Here is another work attributed to the Master:

Actually there is one page with one work reproduced by this artist at the Web Gallery of Art, but strangely enough his name is not in the list. He is simply listed as "Unknown Master."
