Lotus flowers are very popular in China and during summer, lakes and ponds are covered with their huge leaves. Unfortunately, these plants flower in August, which is not a good time to visit China because it is very hot und humid. The last time though, we went in early September 2010 because we were taking our kids who had to get back to University 3 weeks later, and caught the tail end of the lotus season. As you can see, the blossoms had mostly gone, so no close-up pictures for me.

You can imagine my happy surprise when during a trip to see friends in southern Germany last summer, I discovered a pond full of nearly open lotus flowers in the tiny local botanical garden. So the next day I went back first thing in the morning and found them all opened; truly a glorious sight!
I took home loads of photos and come up with one painting out of them.
