White on Black - WIP
Hey Everyone!
It's been awhile, but I'm back doing another animal portrait. This one is white on black (only my second one), and I'm actually trying more colored pencil then white charcoal (figured it would be a good way to start trying a new medium).
This is one of my new kittens...only a few weeks old here...and he kept insisting on charging the camera! He is all white with a slight smudge of grey on the top of his head (hence his name SkidMark - Skid for short).
It is 9" x 12" black Strathmore paper. I figured, since a lot of you had questions when I posted my last white on black....I'd make this one a WIP.
The entire process is so different....you really have to alter the way you normally think while drawing, and things look really weird at certain points throughout the whole drawing.
Here's the first shot:
I've transferred my basic drawing to the black paper with white transfer paper. I went a little heavy on the lines here...a mistake ffrom making my own graphite transfers for so long....forgot how strong the storemade transfers really are - so be careful. As always...I've started around the left eye and will work my way around. I'm laying down the white with the side of the pencil so I can blend in the midtones without indenting the paper's surface.

Ok, here's an update:
I've started layering little areas of fur, building up to the lighter areas. I lay the first layers down and blendingthem into the paper and smoothing them out, creating a greyish mid-tone as some of the paper shows through. The lighter the fur, the more layers. Top layers, of course. won't be blended like this.
I'm a long way off from the top layers ...being more concerned with form and value right now. For the lower layers I really do approach it more like a painting...only I have to keep reminding myself that if I erase something the area will become darker...not lighter...This is a very odd mindset for me to be in - and I have made some mistakes!

Monica ~ Thanx! I don't usually do the "cute" stuff...but I thought that this definately has an "awwww" factor - of course it is my kitten!
Here's an update:
Just more building of fur on face!

Yes it's a white charcoal transfer sheet...I haven't used it often enough to know how dark the lines were going to come out initially...must keep that in mind for the next time!
Here's a quick update before I go to work...still so far to go!!!

I love how you have achieved such a realistic look to the fur.I am looking forward to seeing how you finish this one.

Pippin katrem Abu Haidar Thank You! It feels good to know that I can branch out into something new and still have people respond to it!
Tonight I continued to build up the face and worked the middle leg. Next I'll work the last leg and finish the build up layers in the face.
Once this is done I'll be able to spray it and go in with the finishing details. I'm also trying to decide how much I should do in terms of "grounding" the kitten. Any suggestions certainly are welcome!

Skid mark sure is a cutie. I am very much enjoying your WIP. Probably 44 years ago I used to paint white opaque watercolor on black paper, and you are probably going to inspire me to try that again.
I might trail a string in front of him/her and have it disappear in the fore ground, or a lady bug ... something that is getting all of that attention.
Thank you for taking the time to post your progress. It is great.

This certainly is coming along nicely!!
As for grounding...how about just a hint of reflection as if he's (she?) is on a very shiny floor?? Just an idea.
