Rapidly Changing Celebrity Wip

Here are a few progress pics from the celebrity portrait that I started after I finished my last baby commission. I needed to take a break from commission work and challenge myself with something that I wanted to do.

I find that it helps re-energize me for the next commission.

I'm going to post a few composite pics to get the "bad" beginning out of the way.
At what point do you recognize this star? If you recognize him at all that is!

Composite 2

Ok...and here's the composite pic of three more progressions ~
See how the values change when other areas are applied? This is why I constantly jump around a portrait as I'm working on it.

Composite 3

Oh yes I guess I should give you some stats on this (do you recognize him yet?)

Paper: white pastel paper
Size: 12" x 16" (overall smaller then I'm used to...but this head measures almost 10-1/2" from chin to top!)
Medium: Charcoal Pencil

Here's the last composite!

Finally a larger, and better, picture

And now for a larger picture!

This piece as been quite a challenge for me (still getting used to the white paper again).

The mouth is at an odd angle (alot of the ones I have chosen lately seem to have this challenge!)

The hand, and fingers are also at a difficult angle, and not my best features!

The ring is rather intricate but integral to the feel of the piece, and part of the reason that I chose it.

Well I hope you've enjoyed seeing this so far....any guesses yet?

Is it Colin Farrell??? I think it is, it looks like him, but maybe I'm wrong. If it is, great joB! He is pretty hard to draw(I've really tried). I love the hair, great job, can't wait to see more.

gillyvu ~ Thank you! There are more details, and scraggly hairs, to be added to the eyebrows after the first spraying is done.

angeline ~ I'm glad you're enjoying the WIP...even if you don't know who it is!

shelli ~ Thanks for the encouragement!

jawarriner ~ Yes he does have a "bit" of a reputation, doesn't he? This picture attracted me because I thought that it looked like a rare glimpse into something deeper. You know girls, the substance that we keep thinking we see in a guy...that probably isn't really there at all!

The ring has taken an unusual amount of time for the actual amount produced...a lot of laying down and pulling up until I have the basics laid down correctly and I know they aren't moving. There will be a lot of finishing details that can't be added until the the first light spraying occurs (which is a long ways off )

Mustan & Holly ~ Thanks!

I've been working this one in a lot of series of light "washes" so it seems to be taking a very long time...and I seemingly "lose" certain areas for awhile....the goal is to make sure I bring them all back, in harmony, in the end.

Some areas can't be finished until after spraying once...cuase further work on them now wold just make them "muddy."

Still a long way to go ---- but here's an update!

Hi Nancy-Yea, this is cool,I've only seen him in 2 movies-Minority Report ,and that one in the phone booth, but I could recognize him by the 2nd or 3rd step,it's coming out great!
I wonder if you could elaborate a little on the spraying thing?
I hardly use fixative, and then only for a final...was wondering in what circumstances you would use a workable spray, and for what reasons?I know you said to avoid muddiness, but what is your process, and are there other instances you would use it?
Thanks, and can't wait for an update on Mr.Farrell!
