"Destiny" Leaping Salmon - FINISHED

I'm hoping to get this done by Saturday , but we'll see. I have to submit a digital file by end of day Saturday to enter it in the art show for a local salmon festival. I'm not sure how much time in on it so far, a couple of hours, I guess . . . I'm really bad at keeping track, but if I really crunch on it over the next couple of days, I think I can do it!!

It's a 5 x 7 and I've only used a #16 X-acto so far. I think I'll see what the tattoo needles can do on the fish.

I'm trying to make this one to go faster by not bothering with my usual insane stipple technique - just scratching. And I've jumped right in (pardon the pun) without much of an initial drawing. The fish is from the RL and the water is from various reference sources. The fish will be dark and the water will be light, the upper left corner will remain black.

Here's a detail - it looks soooo abstract here, but I like the way it's coming along.

Ann this is cool! I wonder, when it's done, if it will look like an Ann Ranlett considering the change in technique. Another string to your very long bow.

Re: "Destiny" Leaping Salmon - WIP

Thanks, Patrick! I don't know if this one will be immediately identifiable as an "Ann" board, it is definitely different. There may be some stippling on the fish, but not much.

Here's some more progress. My eyes are crossing, so I need to call it quits for now. I'll get back to it this afternoon.

BTW, the corners of the board are rounded. There was a chip in one corner, so I took a Dremel to all of them. I've also dragged my knife all the way around the edge to add a white line and I've scratched away some extra in the corners.

great start, and I like the rounded corners. I can see a scratched border around some pictures being a nice addition.

Thank you, Margaret & Linda!

I'm still plugging away, here's a new scan and a detail. I only have the tail left to do on the fishy and obviously some more water.

Re: "Destiny" Leaping Salmon - WIP

Thanks, Sue & Kat!

It's finished, and just in time to submit it to the Salmon Festival art show (digital file: sent!). I still have to spray and frame it, but I'm just glad the dang thing's done. It definitely took on a life of its own and took way more time to complete than I had envisioned. I don't think it made any difference that I didn't use my stipple technique - all that splishy, splashy, sparkly water would have been time consuming no matter what!

Well, it's superb but also it in fact did end up looking like a Ranlett! You may have used different techniques but if I hadn't been told who did this, I reckon I would have picked it was you. I think

Thank you, Patrick - I'm glad you think you could pick it out of a lineup.

It's funny, now that I've gotten to know other scratchers' work better, as I was working on it, I felt like parts of it (the linear scratches in the water) reminded me of Hector's style.

Re: "Destiny" Leaping Salmon - FINISHED

Cathy tipped me off about Zoomify and it's just sooo cool. I "Zoomified" the salmon drawing.

http://www.annran.com/pages/images/o...stiny_zoom.htm

Others are zoomified too, they're on this page: http://www.annran.com/website/?page_id=186

Click an image to go to its dedicated web page where you can click on the image to zoom.

That's also a sneak preview of my new web site. It's still a long way from finished, but I'm chugging away at it.
