WDE Sept 7 Couldn't resist chester and shoes

This is a first time experiment with a gouache/india ink resist paint technique...tricky! ....not very successful as a composition (sorry Chester, shoes would have been better alone), simple designs seem to work better for this (chicken), but fun just the same and I will explore this more another time

I think the shoes with Chester turned out really well... and of course the chicken as well.... very interesting technique... would love to learn more!!!

Re: WDE Sept 7 Couldn't resist chester and shoes

A cat with a shoe fetish. My son's dog had a thing for one of my best shoes, alas, a week when I dog sat 11 yrs ago. He never touched one of son's myriad shoes and boots, lined up neatly and available. Must have been a black lab puppy teen stage Chicken looks great too. Nice effect you achieved here.

I won't show this to Chester as he already has several wonky fetishes! But I do love this!!! Wish we knew how you did it...shoes work well with the cat design. Very coolio as EP said.

Re: WDE Sept 7 Couldn't resist chester and shoes

There are several good websites for this technique, with beautiful examples. Roughly, lightly draw image with pencil/graphite, (I don't do this, a bad habit, but I did with this to help keep track of white paint areas more easily). Next, using undiluted tempera/gouache paint, fill in areas of white and colour, (this is very hard on your brushes, if you rinse them you need to dry them off, too much water in the paint has bad results). All areas you want black, leave blank. Let dry. Soak a brush with india ink and carefully and evenly cover your painting...ALL OF IT...this part is scary. Let dry completely. You now have a lovely black paper. Run the tap lightly, lukewarm, and rinse your painting, gently rubbing especially the areas you know have gouache/tempera. Your painting will magically reveal! TADA! These instructions are sketchy, look up gouache india ink resist painting for better guidance! Happy experiments!
