a few from the fair

Hello, everyone.
These are plein air oils from a local fair.
Any advice is much appreciated. Are they effective? Is the drawing convincing?

Tea Cups 10x12, oil on panel

'Hillbilly Village' 10x12, oil on panel

Swans oil on panel, 11x14

Thanks for looking!

I particularly like the one with swans, but was it a fair with no people? A few figures would make them more convincing.

These are nicely done, and well rendered. No problems with the drawing from my viewpoint...!

Drawing is good, some of the edges could maybe be less defined, more lost and found. Has a sort of bleak feel without people but that works in a way.

Re: a few from the fair

The works themselves are good but a few people there would work much more interesting.
A very good opportunity to tell a story with your work.
Well done...............................jan

Re: a few from the fair

I agree with Treeshark, I think you could work on that concept of an empty fair ground, it gives it a slightly eerie feel. You could maybe work on that in a studio piece by using more interesting colour and compositional elements to enhance that feel. For example you could make the composition more startling or jarring perhaps and use more acidic hues in the tea cups for example - think also about the background colour and how they might act to push those colour notes you are focusing on. It would require a bit of planning and some colour studies to see what works. As far as drawing is concerned it holds up well. Good job.

Re: a few from the fair

The background for the teacup ride was an interesting painting all its own. Everything hangs so well together.

Re: a few from the fair

Thanks for commenting, Janet.
The park wasn't yet open to the public, just carnies around setting up.
Lucky you, Virginia! Thanks for your words.
Thanks, John. That's encouraging to hear.
I appreciate your comment on edges, Rob. There's always more to learn.
Thank you, Jan. Personally I enjoyed the 'calm before the storm' starkness and could have painted a dozen more there.
You paint a vivid picture of it with your words, James. Thanks for checking my drawing.
Thank you for your insight, Gary. I was near finished when the sky opened up and drenched me (I had set up under a slide, but there was nowhere dry). I spent another fifteen minutes in the downpour then headed home.

I like the third one, but maybe I'm biased!
