Charcoal - Greenwood Plantation

This is a charcoal wip of Greenwood Plantation. I roughed in a few very light guidelines, because if the relative dimensions are not accurate from the start, later it would be very hard to correct. I think that this is actually the hardest and most important part of the drawing. After placing the guidelines, I coated the entire page with soft charcoal. In this stage, I intentionally left some areas a little lighter than others. From here on, the rest is fun, just pushing the charcoal around the page until something pops. Thanks for stopping by for a look. Comments / criticisms are welcome.

Maybe you should wait till the fog burns off before taking photos, Ron. It was so dense when you took this shot that we can't really see the artwork. I'm sure it's under there somewhere ... the sun looks like it's trying to get through in the middle though ...

Ken, I just draw what I see ... unfortunately, visibility was about 2 inches last night.
Thanks Kenny, you're a lot more patient than Mr. Hawk

Re: Charcoal - Greenwood Plantation

Ron, did you mean that you would be grounding up a charcoal pencil into a pile, and pushing the pile around on the paper fast, with the hopes that friction would start an explosion?

(I'm still trying to figure out whether I got fooled with this one or not)

Ron, this will be very interesting to see develop. I will be watching (as soon as the fog lifts, that is)...

Wow thevaliantx, your imagination rivals ol' Sparrowhawks. Once the charcoal is "pushed" around a bit, I expect a small "pop", an explosion would be a bit distracting. I'll try to let you know in advance when to expect it.
Thanks Bren, hope to check out the conditions later.

But wouldn't that be better than a small fire?

Re: Charcoal - Greenwood Plantation

I was wondering awhile ago what happened to Ron and his charcoal master pieces? And here we are... with him at work!! WoW!!! Glad to see you back with more of your work, Ron.

I look forward to this materializing, too.

Bless you folks. IRma

You're right Ken, last time one of my wips caught fire, I had to rename the piece from "Forest in Fog" to "Forest Fire"
Hey Irma, good to hear from you again, glad to have you along for the adventure.
I'll try to spend some time today on this thing if the weather conditions allow

Re: Charcoal - Greenwood Plantation

Next update ... just pushing the charcoal around to get a feel for values, roughed in the columns, got about an hour invested. Thanks for looking and comments / criticisms always welcome.

Ron, I can see it coming thru! But what was that flitting by that column, could it be the ghost of a young maiden who lost her love to the sea?

Hey Bren and Kenny, you're both right ... it's a young maiden with gas ... sorry, that was uncalled for
